The one thing that you need to know about hair loss is that 95% of all hair loss is genetic. However, other factors play a huge role in determining if you are going to suffer from some type of hair loss. While there is not much that you can do about genetic hair loss, there are things that you can do to control the other factors. While there is no one cure for preventing hair loss there are numerous things that you can try to help prevent hair loss.

Another type of hair loss that you cannot control is hair loss that is related to pregnancy. Hair loss from pregnancy affects over 50% of women; it is caused by hormonal changes in your body. What happens is that your hair grows everyday and you normally lose about 50 to 100 hairs a day. When you are pregnant your hair is still growing, but you are no longer shedding the dead hair. About six months after your baby is born you will begin to start shedding the dead hairs at an alarming rate. The good news is that after about six months of steadily losing your hair your normal hair production is going to return.

Causes of hair loss

Interesting to discover is that about 50% of the population experience normal hair loss by the time that they are 50 years old, which normal hair loss is considered anything that is not abnormal. The people who suffer from abnormal hair loss are going to notice that their hair is shedding in large amounts after they have combed or brushed their hair, but they might also notice their hair thinning rapidly or falling out in clumps.

Here are some causes of abnormal hair loss.

Number one: Childbirth

When you are pregnant your hair is going to continue to grow, but you will not shed the 50 to 100 hairs each day like the one you normally do. Therefore, after you deliver your baby a lot of your hair is going to enter the resting stage of the hair cycle at one time. Soon after this happens, your hair is going to star falling out in large amounts. However, normal hair cycles should begin again in about six months.

Number two: Illness
If you have a high fever, severe infection, a major surgery, or something really stressful going on you might notice that within four weeks to three months that your hair starts to fall out at once. For the most part this condition is going to correct it, but if it does not you may need to seek treatment.

Number three: Thyroid disease
If you have an overactive and underactive thyroid it can cause hair loss. If you have a thyroid problem and it is resulting in hair loss this problem can be reversed through proper treatment.

Number four: Lack of protein
You can develop protein malnutrition from crash diets or from becoming a vegetarian because you are excluding protein from your diet. What your body does to help save protein is shift your growing hairs into the resting phase, which can lead to massive hair loss. The best way to reverse this process is through eating the proper amount of protein.

If you are suffering from abnormal hair loss, the best thing that you can do is to consult your doctor.

Here are some tips that you can follow to help prevent hair loss.

Tip one:
The most important thing that you can do is to take care of your hair. When taking care of your hair you want to make sure that you wash it on a regular basis, but you also want to avoid excessive washing. For the most part, you only need to wash your hair once a day with shampoo and conditioner. When washing your hair make sure that you use a good shampoo and conditioner because they will do less damage to your hair and can do more to restore your hair. You want to use a mild, non-medicated, and non-alkaline shampoo, if you can buy shampoos and conditioners that have organic ingredients whenever possible. You also want to avoid using hair dryers, crimpers, curling irons and other similar hair products. You can use the products you just want to make sure that you do not overuse them because overusing them is the leading cause of hair loss in both men and women. Because heat is so damaging to your hair you are also going to want to avoid exposing your hair to direct sunlight because it can cause your hair to become brittle. Once your hair becomes brittle it tends to break off easily, which is what contributes to hair loss.

Tip two:
If you color your hair, do not color it more than every six to eight weeks. Coloring your hair too often can damage your hair beyond repair, which increases the chances of hair loss. In fact, the best thing that you can do to prevent hair loss from coloring your hair is to not color you hair, just let it turn grey naturally. Any kind of chemical treatment is going to dry out your hair and cause some type of damage, so you want to do them as little as possible, despite the newest trends in society. You should also avoid using more than one chemical treatment at a time, so that your hair has time to heal from the first treatment, and the fewer chemicals placed on your hair the better for your hair.

Tip three:
Do not pull your hair too tight when braiding or using a similar hairstyle because it can lead to significant hair loss. Your hair is not elastic so any pulling can remove the hair rather than stretching it. In addition, keeping your hair tightly braided causes your hair to pull when you move your head.

Tip four:
Make sure that you lead a healthy and regular lifestyle. This means that you are going to need to make sure that you get enough sleep so that your body is refreshed every morning, but it also means that you need to go to bed at a regular and consistent time each night. Getting enough sleep is important in keeping your body healthy and in good condition. This is important because illnesses and antibiotics can also lead to hair loss, so you want to be as healthy as possible to help avoid illnesses and the need for taking medication.

Tip five:
Keep in mind that whenever you shower or bathe you are stripping the oil from your skin and hair. The oil in your skin and hair is used to trap water inside your body, but it also helps to keep your skin moist. What you want to do when bathing or showering is to avoid using harsh soaps, especially if they contain some type of deodorant. You also want to avoid using any shampoo or other products that contain an astringent because it will lead to drying out your scalp. The only time you want to use this type of product is if you have oily skin or hair. In general, you only want to wash your hair once a day with shampoo and conditioner, but if you have oily hair, you should wash it more often. If you suffer from dry hair, you should follow shampoos with an acid rinse or an oil-based conditioner. Just no matter what product you are using try to buy products that only contain organic ingredients.

Tip six:
Eating a well balanced diet is also a great way to prevent hair loss. In addition to maintaining a well-balanced diet you are going to want to avoid eating too much of certain things, and will want to increase certain nutrients. One nutrient that you will want to increase in your diet is calcium. Getting the right amount of calcium in your diet is important because it helps to strengthen the hair follicles and roots in your scalp. You want to make sure that you avoid eating too much salt and sugar because it can speed up the hair loss process. If possible, you should avoid using extra salt or sugars in your foods because most foods already have their own natural sugars and sodium.

Tip seven:
Depending on the type of hair loss, which you are suffering from you might be able to stop further hair loss and regain some of your lost hair using prescription drugs. The most common drugs that are prescribed to help prevent hair loss are Finasteride and Minoxidil. What you need to know about these prescriptions is that they do not always work to prevent hair loss and they do have some serious side effects. Side effects of these drugs include erectile dysfunction, growth of breasts in men, acne, headaches, and many others. These drugs do help some people prevent hair loss, but like other prescription medications, it is not right for everybody. Talk to your doctor before you begin this medication to be sure that it is the right choice for you to prevent hair loss.

Tip eight:
You are going to need to practice healthy hair habits even before you notice any hair loss. The reason for this is that by keeping your hair healthy before problems start to show up you are reducing your chances of serious hair loss problems. If you start noticing a bit more hair in the hairbrush or in the shower or you notice, less hair on your head you will want to start making changes right away to help take better care of your hair.

Tip nine:
Swimming is another major cause of damage for your hair, both the chemicals in chlorinated pools and the salt in the ocean. This is damaging to your hair because it causes excessive dryness to your hair. However, the general motion of swimming causes your hair to become tangled and knotted, which can cause your hair to break when you try removing them. If you decide to swim, wear a hair cap or shampoo and condition your hair directly after swimming.

Tip ten:
Avoid excessive brushing and pulling on your hair because it can cause your hair to break off. It is from too much brushing and pulling that you will notice hair tangled around your hair tie or comb. You want to brush your hair as little as possible, and you never want to brush your hair when it is wet. The reason for this is that it is more fragile when it is wet and will easily break.

The one thing that you want to be aware of is that there are many old wives' tales about preventing hair loss, but these old wives' tales are far from the truth. Some of the old wives' tales about preventing hair loss include standing on your head to increase blood to your hair follicles or massaging your scalp, but these are just rumors. Those methods will not help prevent hair loss, but some of them can make your scalp feel better.

Before you decide on a specific method to use to prevent hair loss, you are going to want to research that method. Find out everything that you can about your method of choice, including the side effects. If you have any questions or concerns about what method to use to prevent hair loss you can consult your doctor.
