There are signs to recognize the spiraling steps toward anorexia. These signs are seen if you are looking. However, in the middle of it all anorexia has a deceptive mask that will make it hard to see what it is.

Anorexia is a severe problem in young people, due to the overall image issues in the United States. Barbie Dolls and Anorexic models and teen stars tend to create an image in the head of children that make them think the way they are supposed to be is skin and bones.

However a healthy self-esteem, and a healthy diet is the way that a child should be thinking, not thin and bony. How do we get from the thinking that is presented in the movies and magazines to the healthier and happier life? Well in order to get to that point, we have to recognize the signs of a person who is beginning to fall into the deception of anorexia.

In so many places we see advertisings that talk about eating healthy, but when does the spectrum change over to the side that is bulimia and anorexia. Here are some reasoning that a person with weight concerns will use to justify and what you should watch for when you are concerned that you or someone you care about is creating unhealthy habits to dealing with eating issues.

  1. Constant irritation and fear of gaining weight, and body fat

  2. Misconception of their appearance verses the reality of a healthy body.

  3. A strong mindset of becoming thinner and thinner

When a person begins to be overly concerned about their weight and weight loss, they will do things that become dangerous to their health and they do not even know it. There are studies that show with great concern that many people, especially teens will not se their real body and begin to limit their food intake, or choose to vomit, to reduce the calorie intake they would have.

Some signs that will help you see issues with anorexia or bulimia are:

  • You will see a dramatic weight loss

  • There is often times a decrease in menstrual periods for several months at a time

  • The person will create meals for other people, but saying they have already ate, or not eating the meal themselves

  • You can see this person frequently looking gin the mirror and being obsessed about what they see

  • When a thin person continues to complain about being over weight even though they are already very thin.

  • Constant weighing of themselves several times a week or day

  • Covering up thinness with baggy clothing so that other people are not aware of the health issue

  • Eating specific foods only, which do not have any real calories. This would be like lettuce, water, etc.

  • Skipping of meals, and saying they are not hungry is another way that you will notice an issue with anorexia

There are two different types of anorexia. Both of these options are devastating to the overall health of the person practicing these habits. Here is a brief explanation of each.

The classic form of anorexia is based on the deprivation of food from the body in order to lose weight and maintain a dangerously low weight. The amount of calories that are consumed with an anorexic diet is too low to support the person's body and health.

The other type of anorexia is call binge eating and then purging anorexia. This person will limit the food and calorie intake they have, but in addition they will force themselves to vomit, take laxatives, diuretics, or enemas to minimize their weight.

This is a mixed form of bulimia and anorexia. It is proven that roughly 50% of all people who get anorexia also develop bulimia.

There are many devastating effects that will happen from anorexia and bulimia. These are anything from hair loss, to bone deterioration and much worse. If you have a family member or loved one that is showing these signs of weight concern and anorexia or bulimia habits, it is time to look into intervention.

Though the effects do not appear immediate, the body will deteriorate as each day goes by with starvation. The self-esteem and healthy eating habits may be able to be rebuilt at home; however there may be need for professional help.
