Keeping your family healthy and active

family32274482.jpgIf you're like most families, you're busier now than ever before. With hectic work, school, and extracurricular schedules, many families find it easy to fall into habits that are more convenient than healthy, such as take-out food instead of healthy food or TV instead of playing outside.

However, behaviors like this can lead to all kinds of health problems. If you want to keep this from happening to your family, the following are a few tips for keeping your family healthy and active:

Cook your meals
It's easy to grab fast food or takeout when you're busy or you've have a long day, but these heavily-processed foods are often loaded with calories, fat, and other unhealthy ingredients. Instead, cook healthy meals for your family. You can even cook dinners and then freeze them for later when you're busy. Using a crockpot is great as well-by the time you're off work, dinner is ready! Not only will you save money, but cooking instead of eating take-out will also save your waistline and overall health.

When school is in session, pack your kids' lunches instead of letting them buy school meals, which are often processed foods and loaded with fat and calories. This is a great way to save money and encourage healthy eating.

Stay active

Exercise and an active lifestyle will help you live longer, fight obesity, and have better health in general. You can get in the habit of exercise by making sure to work exercise into your day, whether it's joining a gym or taking a walk in the morning or evenings.

Even as a family, you can all make sure you exercise together. Some ideas for working exercise as a family into your day include:

  • Go for family bike rides or walks. Find local bike and walking trails, or just go for a walk or ride around the neighborhood. If you have small children, put them in a stroller, or consider getting a jogging stroller. If you're planning on riding bikes, you can buy pull-along trailers that attach to your bike for small children.
  • Play with the kids outside. Parents will be surprised at how much of a work out they can get by chasing their kids around outside, whether it's pushing them on swings at the playground, playing tag in the backyard, or tossing a Frisbee as a family.
  • Make exercise a priority. Instead of looking at exercise as something to dread, make it fun for everyone and make it a priority.

Limit TV time
TV itself is not in itself unhealthy, but spending hours in front of the TV every night or allowing kids to watch all day and night is a habit to avoid. Instead, limit TV watching to no more than two hours each day. Make sure the TV stays off during meals, and keep TVs out of children's bedrooms. Many parents have come up with creative ways to limit TV and work in exercise at the same time; for example, for every minute your child spends watching TV, he has to spend an equal amount of time playing outside or getting some sort of exercise..

Staying healthy as a family is not difficult to do. The above guidelines will help your family to stay healthy by eating right, limiting TV and other unhealthy habits, and getting proper exercise.
