What does depression do?
Most people that suffer from depression often have a feeling of hopelessness, sadness, restless, lack of energy, feelings of worthlessness, thoughts of suicide, and many other problems. While some people are able to get out of bed, others have a hard time even getting up and facing the world for the day. Many people try to act like nothing is wrong, even though the inner pain of depression is absolutely killing them.
Who suffers from depression?
Depression can happen to anyone. However studies have found that women are twice as likely as men to suffer depression. Emotional shocks to the system can also cause depression like a death in the family, job loss, or pregnancy. Many women suffer from a disease known as post-partum depression after they give birth. Post-partum depression usually occurs within 12 months after childbirth, but some women experience up to 2-3 years later. If someone in your family has been diagnosed with depression, you are at an increased risk for developing it as well.
How can you treat depression?
To treat depression, the first thing you need to do is recognize that you have a problem. Depression is not something that is just in your head, it is real and there is a treatment available to help you feel better. Medications like Zoloft and Prozac are often prescribed to treat depression. These medications help to regulate the chemicals in your brain that are causing you to have an imbalance. Medications must be taken as prescribed or else you can go into a reversed state and you will actually slip into a higher depressed state. Many people have even commented that the medications allow them to sleep better, which is needed in order to help your body stay fresh and rejuvenated.
In addition to medications, several doctors and patients have found that there are some alternative treatments. Counseling sessions often help people with depression as a trained therapist helps them to work through some of their issues and challenges they face that cause them to become depressed. During counseling sessions, most therapists will try and help you let go of any feelings of guilt you may have along with suicidal thoughts. Typically the therapy sessions will last for about 3 months. Some people continue on with therapy sessions for the rest of their lives because it makes them feel lighter and they can continue on day-to-day without inner pain.
In addition to counseling, exercise and eating healthy is another common treatment. Exercise helps to release endorphins, which make you feel better. Daily exercise is not only recommended, it is part of the treatment program. Each person should have at least 30 minutes of daily exercise in order to keep their heart healthy, but to help keep depression under control.
Eating healthy can also help depression. Removing caffeine and sugars from your diet will help to calm the nervous system. Anxiety is common for people with depression and by removing caffeine; you will help to remain calm and rational.
Depression is real and it's not something to be embarrassed by. It can affect anyone at any time. Talk to your doctor if you suspect you are suffering from depression. Seeking treatment is the best thing you can do not only to help yourself but to help all the people around you.
