It starts with your doctor. You should be working with them and taking their advice. Have regular visits and keep them updated on things that have been going on. Don't be afraid to ask them for advice or tell them your problems. They are there to help you and work with you.
Test your blood sugar regularly. Your doctor should make a plan with you for how often and what times of day to check. When you wake up very first thing it is always recommended to check your blood sugar. Your doctor will tell you when other times would be good for your body.
Keep a record of all of your blood sugar readings. This is very important so that your doctor can see if your medications need adjustments. You doctor will spot irregularities and work with you to smooth them out.
Set up a routine. Get up at the same time, eat at the same time, do what ever you can to be on a routine. When you need to leave your routine, say for a vacation or a birthday, then plan ahead. Know what will be different and how you need to adjust.
Make exercise a part of your daily routine. This will help you to maintain your weight, something that diabetics struggle with. Don't make it complicated, go for a walk. But make that walk progressively longer and more challenging.
Set up a meal plan. This is something that will help you to know when you are eating and what. Include snacks in your plan so that they can be counted. You will be able to regulate your insulin around your meal plan.
Eat a snack right before bed. This little trick will help you not wake up with low blood sugar every morning. It doesn't have to be anything big, just a small snack. If you are sleeping in longer than usual then set an alarm to get up early (around 6) and give yourself a shot, then go back to bed. You will not worry about low blood sugar and you probably won't remember getting up early!
You should not smoke, this is a good idea for everyone. And alcohol should be avoided. A small drink with dinner should be alright, but drinking without food is not. Your doctor will be able to tell you what is healthiest for your body.
Teach your family what to do incase of emergency. Tell them what you need with high and low blood sugar. Over time you may seem to not have any symptoms, it is just because you don't notice them as much. Let your family work with you. They can be some of your best supporters.
Visit your dentist regularly. This sounds a little strange, but sometimes your body forgets to help your teeth when it is so worried about the other vital organs.
Be careful around the holidays, this is when a routine is really thrown out the window. Talk with your doctor and find out what will be best for you to do. Only take one serving, overeating is something that will make your blood sugar go crazy.
