Midlife crisis or opportunity?
A midlife crisis is common for many people as they start to get older. It is different in men than it is from women. Typically what happens is the person reaches a pinnacle in their life. The adjustments they go through are often work-related, family, emotional, and sometimes physical. The body starts to age and this causes people to get sick and unable to perform most of the activities they were able to participate in when they were younger. For some people, the realization that they have gotten older is completely devastating. For others, it is just another phase of life that they need to learn to adjust to. Part of going through a midlife crisis also entails forgetting things as the memory begins to age and its not quite as sharp as it used to be.

Some people claim that a midlife crisis is only a mental thing. It is something that a person needs to experience as they learn to accept their new phase in life. Sometime this means that people will do drastic things like quitting their job, dissolving their marriage, or spending a large amount of money. People are naturally resistant to change, which is why it is often hard for most people to deal with a midlife crisis. Fear is another symptom of a midlife crisis because you are unsure of what truly lies ahead, which is scary for a lot of people.
Depending upon the severity of your midlife crisis, you may find that your midlife crisis has caused you to go into a depressive state. Looking over life choices may cause you to be unhappy and dissatisfied with the way you are living your life. Dwelling on these past mistakes can cause some people to commit suicide, thinking that their family will be better off without them. Going into such a high state of depression is detrimental to not only your health but to everyone around you. Seek medical attention if you find that this new phase of life is depression and causes you to start dwelling in sadness all the time.
Some researchers suggest that instead of thinking about how unfortunate you are because you are on the downhill slope of life that you should look at how you are going to spend your spare time. The children may be grown up and moved out of the house and you may be quickly approaching retirement. Now is the time to look for different opportunities. If you don't want to continue working once you are able to cash in your retirement, look for volunteer opportunities. Service is one of the easiest ways to make yourself feel better and to appreciate your life.
Planning a vacation with your spouse or a few close friends is another great idea. While you may not be able to do all of the physical demands that you could in your youth, you can finally afford to take that dream vacation you have always thought about. Put it in the near future so you have something to look forward to sooner rather than later and it can help to jolt you out of your midlife crisis funk that you may be stuck in.
It is not going to be easy to pull yourself through a midlife crisis. Most of it depends upon your ability to learn how to be content with yourself and with this stage of life. You have to find a way to make yourself happy. This may involve weekly or monthly counseling sessions where you can talk to another person about the way you have been feeling. Do whatever it takes to make yourself find the happiness you need to survive and to keep your loved ones in your life.
