Preventing Strokes

There are certain lifestyle habits that should be altered or else stopped altogether in order to prevent strokes, whether you have never experienced a stroke in your life or even if you are a survivor of a stroke.

Control Medical Problems
There are several medical problems that contribute to your chances of having a stroke, including diabetes, heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, personal history of stroke, and temporary strokes. If these health issues are controlled with medication or other lifestyle factors, the chances of having a stroke will decrease.

Maintain Optimal Weight
Optimal weight depends on a number of factors, including your height, muscle mass, and genetics. Your doctor can tell you if you are at your optimal weight. If you are overweight or obese, your chances of having a stroke are greater. The more overweight you are, the greater the chance. Maintaining optimal weight will help keep your body healthy on many different levels. Regular exercise and a good diet are the best ways to control your weight and prevent stroke.

Eat a Diet High in Fruits and Vegetables
Diet is another factor in determining whether the risk of stroke is high or low. A healthy diet, one that comprises lots of fruits and vegetables, is optimal. Fruits and vegetables are low in saturated fat, total fat, cholesterol, and sodium, and they are full of many essential vitamins and minerals that a body needs, particularly a body that is practicing stroke prevention.

Lower blood pressure
Lowering your blood pressure can be done by talking with your doctor about prescription medication. A diet low in sodium can also help lower blood pressure. Be sure that the foods you eat have as little salt as possible or no salt at all by checking labels and by not adding extra table salt to recipes. And make sure to get plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Also, limit consumption of alcohol, maintain a healthy weight, and stay physically active to help lower your blood pressure.

Quit smoking
Smoking causes so many health problems that it should be stopped anyway. But for those particularly worried about stroke risks, daily or even occasional cigarette smoking causes the chance of having a stroke increase.

Exercise
Whether you are a couch potato or a computer potato, you are at a higher risk of having a stroke than your active counterparts. Exercising 3 to 5 days a week for thirty minutes is the lowest amount that is recommended to maintain adequate health and prevent stroke. Even if you are already somewhat active, you can lower your risk of stroke even further by increasing the length, the frequency, or the intensity of exercise that you already do. Anything to keep that heart pumping!

Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Preventing Strokes
It is important to be prepared before an emergency happens. Preventing strokes is something that your doctor can help you with. If you experience any of the symptoms of stroke, the sooner you get help, the sooner the problems can be stopped and a full stroke can be prevented.
