Recognizing female heart attack symptoms
According to the World Health Organization approximately 12 percent of deaths in the world are caused by heart attacks. A heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) is when heart disease interrupts the blood supply to the heart, causing a shortage of oxygen that can damage heart tissue and it can kill you.

Both men and women can experience different symptoms that point to a heart attack, however they are similar to symptoms of many other diseases, which makes it hard to pinpoint. The symptoms of a heart attack in females are quite different from males. Here are some of the female heart attack symptoms you need to know about:
- Extreme stress and anxiety
- Extreme fatigue and weakness
- Paleness
- Back and abdominal pain
- Racing heart
- Cold sweats
- Dizziness and fainting
The scary thing about heart disease is that there are a number of things that can cause them to occur and most of them are lifestyle choices. Excessive consumption of alcohol, extreme stress, smoking, obesity, and abuse of illegal drugs can all lead to a heart attack. There are a few other things that may cause a heart attack to occur like an history of angina or vascular disease, family history of heart disease, previous stroke or heart attack, diabetes, high blood pressure, high or low cholesterol, and old age.
In addition to feeling many of the classic heart attack symptoms, some people also experience indigestion, nausea, and vomiting. Since the heart attack symptoms in women are different from men, several women are misdiagnosed and sent home. The sad thing is that 40% of women will die from a heart attack, mostly because they do not realize they are having a heart attack.
Some of the classic symptoms of a heart attack that you may feel include the following:
- Pressure or a squeezing in the center of the chest.
- Sharp or shooting pains that go up the arm and spread to the neck or jaw.
However almost half of all females do not feel those two symptoms and they instead feel the other symptoms. If you have any of those symptoms, you may need to tell the doctor that you believe it is a heart attack. Since the heart attack symptoms are very different in men than women, a lot of doctors send their female patients home writing it off as a mild cardiovascular problem. Shortness of breath, unexplained fatigue, and tightness in the lower chest are the most common heart attack symptoms in females. These symptoms may make you feel nauseas, which is why a lot of women think they are having stomach cramps and they don't think it is pointing to a serious problem. If you are experiencing both of those symptoms, you should seek medical attention to get tested to make sure you are going to be alright.
One thing to remember about female heart attacks is that you probably have experienced some of these symptoms a few weeks before the actual attack. These early warning signs usually indicate that you have a blocked artery, which may require surgery or it will lead to a heart attack or stroke.
As you start to get older, you should go in for routine heart disease screenings to make sure you are not at risk for heart disease. Heart disease screenings can protect you from a heart attack as the doctor will be able to prescribe medications if they notice you have high blood pressure or other problems. Regular exercise is another recommendation because it helps to keep the heart healthy by allowing the blood to flow properly through the body.
