Risk factors for lung cancer

Did you know that lung cancer is one of the most deadly diseases out there? The recovery rate for lung cancer is extremely low and the treatments are often as painful as the disease itself. This means that you should be aware of the things that cause lung cancer and try to avoid them. Most people don't realize that the few things that cause lung cancer can be easily avoided if you are educated about them and have good habits. With just a little know how you can avoid one of the worst diseases around. What you need to know about are risks factors, which describes any particular thing that could raise your chance of getting a disease.

You have probably heard about several of the risk factors for different types of cancer. With skin cancer the risk factors are things like exposure to the sun. Many types of cancer have particular genetic types as one of their primary risk factors. These sorts of risk factors are important because if you are aware of them you know that you could get cancer. This makes you more aware of the possiblity and more likely to recognize cancer and to be regularly checked out for it. You know that you could get the disease so you are careful to watch for it and catch it early if it appears. Knowing about risk factors is one of the best ways to deal with cancer. But what are the risk factors for lung cancer?


  1. By far the greatest risk factor for developing lung cancer is tabacco smoking, which greatly increases the chances of lung cancer. There are over four hundred chemicals in tobacco smoke that have been shown to cause lung cancer. It is a fact that at least eighty percent of lung cancer is due to smoking in one form or another. The risk varies depending on the type of smoking and the amount of smoking, but it is absolutely true that you are putting yourself in harm's way by smoking.
  2. Second hand smoke is another risk factor, and one that leads to the death of several thousand people a year. The percent chance of developing lung cancer as a nonsmoker is much higher if you live with someone who smokes or work around someone who smokes.
  3. Asbestos and radon exposure are another serious problem when it comes to lung cancer. These chemicals and particles can infiltrate your lungs and cause serious cancer. If you know that you have been exposed to these chemicals you should be checked immediately. You should also make sure that the chemicals are removed by experts.
  4. Another cancer causing agent is marijuana, which when smoked repeatedly can easily cause lung cancer. Marijuana cigarettes actually contain more tar than other cigarettes, and they often have unidentified particulate matter that can cause cancer.
  5. Air pollution exposure has been shown to lead to lung cancer and especially if it is for long periods of time. This depends on the type of pollution and the length of the exposure to it.


There are other risk factors for lung cancer, including other chemicals and genetic factors. If you believe that you are at risk you should quickly have a doctor screen you and discuss your risk factor. Just knowing a little bit about lung cancer and its causes could save your life or the life of a loved one. Take some time to learn about the risk factors for lung cancer.
