Risks associated with eye surgery
Are you tired of wearing cumbersome eyeglasses or contacts? For some people contacts are insanely uncomfortable and they need to find an alternative. How would it feel to never have to wear another contact lens or pair of glasses? Would it seriouly change your life for the better? If this is the case then you might want to consider laser eye surgery, or lasik, to correct your vision. Generally lasik is done on people over the age of eighteen who are mildly nearsighted.
It is not a procedure for people with serious eye defects or other serious medical problems. Consult your doctor to see if you qualify. If you do, you could undergo a simple surgery that usually only takes a few days to recover from. However, like all surgeries you should know that there are some risks involved. - One simple risk is that the surgery might not correct the problem, and it might even make it worse. Sometimes there are over or undercorrections that leave you still wearing glasses or contacts. Eye surgery is a difficult business because every person's eyes are different.
- Although it is very rare, sometimes people develop eye infections after the surgery. You should probably be gives some sort of antibiotic eye drops to prevent this from happening. However, if this does not work and you get an eye infection you should see a doctor immediately. Realize that an eye infection if not treated could result in some serious damage to your eye.
- Another problem is known as central corneal islands. These islands are bits of tissue on the cornea that were not removed by the surgery. This is a very rare problem and it usually goes away by itself after a few months.
- Sometimes wrinkles occuri n the corneal flap after surgery. This is very rare but also very treatable. The surgeon should be able to fix the problem with some ease.
- Sometimes the cornea bulges after surgey because the surgeon has cut too deeply into the cornea. This problem can result in the same nearsightedness that brings the person in for surgery and requires a corneal transplant to fix it.
- Another problem that rarely occurs is astigamitism, which in this case causes a blurring of vision. The solution to this problem is usually a corrective lens.
As you can see, there are some risks to lasik surgery, although if you are a good candidate you will probably avoid many of these problems. Even when a problem does occur it is often treatable and very few people have significant problems after lasik. Make sure that you use a good lasik surgeon-someone reccomended by a doctor who has a long history of performing the surgery. You don't want to gamble with your eyes because they are your most important sense. With a good doctor you can easily improve your vision with little chance of side effects. Furthermore, you won't have to use those annoying contacts or glasses anymore. Many people find that they are more attractive when they don't use glasses or contacts, so you should consider this benefit as well.
Also, become well educated about the risks and benefits of the surgery. Don't hesitate to ask your doctor or surgeon about anything that concerns you. It is your health and you are paying for it-get what you deserve.
