Rock climbing is viewed as one of the most challenging sports in the world. It is becoming more and popular because it allows people to challenge themselves and test their limits, while at the same time providing them with a fun way to exercise. Rock climbing to stay fit is a great cardio work out, not to mention muscle building and all while you're soaking in the fresh mountain air and gorgeous views.

One of the best advantages of using rock climbing to stay fit is that you can do it inside and outside. For those of us who could do without all the dirt and nature smells there are many work out facilities that provide rock climbing indoors. It's for this reason alone that makes rock climbing one of the best year round sports. If it's too cold to be outside, then you can find somewhere to practice inside. Let's look at some of the physical and mental advantages at rock climbing to stay fit.

Physical Advantages to rock climbing
Rock climbing can offer you some great advantages physically. Some of those advantages are:

  • Rock climbing helps you develop and maintain muscle tone. Most people are not able to lift their own body weight and rock climbing helps you do just that. As you learn to hold and pull yourself up you tone muscles that you probably never knew you even had.
  • Flexibility is a big part of rock climbing and in doing so you are increasing your flexibility and learning how to balance your body in various different ways. Flexibility can help keep your body healthy and in its best shape; as will rock climbing
  • Rock climbing, much like any other form of exercise will burn those extra calories you are consuming and can help get you to your target weight (if that is your goal). People rock climb for many different reasons, so if you're trying to lose weight this could be a big help.
  • And one last physical advantage to using rock climbing to stay fit is that it can really help with concentration and focusing skills. Rock climbing takes a great deal of concentration and focus; using this can help transfer these characteristics into other parts of your life.


Mental Advantages to Rock climbing

Mentally, rock climbing can provide you with some much need R&R. In fact any type of exercise can release certain endorphins and actually make you feel better about yourself. Here are some ways that rock climbing can give you a mental edge:

  • Rock climbing allows you to challenge yourself physically and mentally. Like most other challenging things, it is mind over body that helps you succeed. Rock climbing is the same and can be very challenging, yet at the same time extremely gratifying.
  • Rock climbing can be a fun activity to do with others; couples, families, etc. Mentally, everyone needs social companionship so why not take advantage of staying physically fit, having fun, and being social all at the same time.
  • And yet another mental advantage to rock climbing is that it helps instill confidence in oneself. There is something to be said for overcoming challenges and something you never thought was possible. Rock climbing helps you feel capable and confident.

Rock climbing to stay fit is definitely becoming a more popular sport today. With so many benefits it's hard to argue with anyone that says that rock climbing is great for the mind and the body.
