Treadmills are a great tool for exercising. They can help develop much stronger lungs and hearts, as well as stronger muscles. Treadmills help improve endurance and the added energy you will develop from your exercise will help in many other parts of life. You will find yourself much more energetic and able to deal with problems as they arise in your life. Yes, even something that seems as trivial as working out on a treadmill can greatly improve your life. Remember that before you try a new form of exercise or change your form of exercise, you should consult a doctor.

There are various things that make them a superior form of exercise equipment, and one of the most important is that you can control all sorts of different settings on the treadmill. Most treadmills have incline and speed controls that you can manipulate to change your workout. With just the pushing of a button you can control your workout in such a way that you will find yourself working out different muscles with very different results. Treadmills are not simply for running at one speed, or for working out in only one direction. Here are some great exercises that you can try on your treadmill:

The most basic way to vary your workout on a treadmill is to try the incline and speed controls at different settings. Not all treadmills have these controls, but most of the ones made today do. Try setting the incline at a little bit higher level, and gradually work it up to a higher level. Try the speed control in a similar way.

Another creative way to change your workout is to try working out your upper body while walking on the treadmill. Do this by lifting a couple of light weight dumbbells while walking. This provides a more complete workout, although you should not try this while the treadmill is moving at a quick speed, or while you are running.

Although it might seem like a strange form of exercise, try walking backwards on the treadmill. You should only do this at a slow pace. Walking backwards actually works out muscles that you do not usually work out, so you will really be making an improvement to your overall muscles health. Expect to feel a little bit sore after doing this workout, because you will be using muscles that you probably did not even know you had.

One great technique to try is a speed interval. Be advised that this is a very strenuous form of exercise, so only try it if you know you are in good health and your body will be able to put up with the strain. Warm up before hand and do some stretching. A speed interval works by running very fast for a short period of time and then resting for a short period of time. Try running very fast for a minute and then walking for two minutes. Then go back to the fast pace for one minute. Repeat this process several times.

When you normally walk or run certain muscles in your legs are exercised and strengthened, but not to the extent that they could be if you were to emphasize them. One good treadmill workout involves walking on the tips of your toes for a certain amount of time. Also try walking on your heels. Make sure to do some regular walking before you do this, and to walk in between the times when you are walking on either your heels or toes. This will workout muscles you are not used to using, so you might be a little sore after the workout.
