The rules of using cosmetics
Have you ever heard some one refer to someone else as "cake faced" or "pancaked'? This is a reference to someone wearing too much makeup. Too much makeup is a problem, but the truth is that there are many areas on the face that can be beautified with the application of cosmetics, as long as some simple rules of cosmetic use are followed.
First and foremost is the rule of minimizing: A general rule of thumb to follow when cosmetics are applied directly to the face is less is better. Some women put on way more than is needed in order to cover up defects, etc. Some women think a thick coat of lipstick or mascara is essential. However, when wearing makeup you want to use a light hand, no matter what kind of cosmetics you are using. Besides not applying too much of one thing you also need to consider how much, or in other words, how many different kinds to wear. For example, some women apply too many cosmetics to the face and end up looking like a clown at times, which is something they never intended to do. So, if you use dark lipstick, go light on the eyes, or if you use dark eye stuff, go light on the cheeks. You want to do your best to achieve the goal of less is more!

Second, you will want to choose a color that is right for your skin. Many women are not skilled in the application of cosmetics and fail to get the desired complimentary effect that cosmetics offer, and this is usually due to choosing something that is either too light or too dark for their skin. If you are not sure what color is best for you, then go visit a make-up counter at a high end department store, and have a professional help you to find the right shade for your skin.
The next rule of using cosmetics is to use the kind designed specifically for your skin type. There are cosmetics made that are suitable for all skin tones and others are made for a specific type of skin. If you have generally normal skin but your forehead gets oily, you will want to use the right kind for the right area of skin. Why? Well, when normal skin cosmetics are applied to oily skin areas, they have a tendency to pool and make these areas very shiny. So choose the right kind of makeup, or make your own by mixing makeup.
These rules apply to cosmetics used on the eyes and mouth too because oily surfaces can appear in these areas. Using the right cosmetic for your face is huge because things like fine age lines around the mouth will show up more if the wrong cosmetics are applied to this area of the face. Some chemicals and nutrients have been used as additives to creams and powders to make skin look healthy and to treat problem areas more effectively.
Last but not least, you want to make sure you are applying cosmetics to a basically healthy skin surface. The cosmetics that people use can cause their skin to break out if the skin surface is not healthy before application. So, unless you want to constantly have to deal with problems with your skin, do not wear makeup until your skin looks healthy.
If you can follow these general rules you will be able to use makeup and cosmetics to enhance your look rather than make yourself look like a clown.
