Tips for choosing the right gym

These days there are dozens of new fad exercise programs that claim the fastest weight loss, the best muscle toning and the simplest to incorporate into your daily schedule. Some of them last for a few months. Some of them last significantly longer. But the important thing is that it gets people out exercising. As long as you're being active, does it really matter what kind of approach you take? Well actually, it might, but that does depends on your purpose in exercising. If you're looking for a simple way to combine cardiovascular exercise with strength training, choosing a gym might be the right choice to fulfill all your exercise desires.

Choosing the right gym is somewhat like choosing a job, a car or a home: finding the one that's just right for you may take a bit of time. Not every first try is a perfect fit. But when you finally choose the right one, it's a match made in heaven. So here are some tips to help you make the decision process a bit easier.

  1. First, you must determine your fitness level. Are you looking for something very challenging or just something that will get you moving? What are you looking for in a gym? Are you trying to loose 30 pounds? Or are you more interested in toning and building your muscles? Do you want to target a specific area of your body (your abs, for example) or are you looking for all-over fitness? Are you looking for a very social atmosphere? Or do you prefer to work out in solitude? Do you enjoy yoga, kick-boxing or Pilates? Or do you prefer to strictly work out in weights? Once you have answered these questions, you will have a better idea of the type of gym you should look for. If you just want to exercise with weights, perhaps a regular old gym would be fine. If you like a mixture of both weight lifting and aerobic classes like kick boxing, a gym like 24 Hour Fitness might be more your style.
  2. Next, you must know the ins and outs of your potential gym. What kind of equipment does it have? Will it be able to fulfill the desires you've decided on from #1? Does it have the classes you're looking for or the environment you're comfortable in?
  3. Third, consider the clientele. You don't want to be the odd-man out, sticking out like a sore thumb in the gym. Once again, find the gym that adheres most to your style. If you're a woman and love a social atmosphere but don't want men ogling you as you exercise, perhaps a gym like Curves is for you. But if you thrive on showing off your muscles to the ladies, maybe a large, co-ed gym is for you. It all depends on what you want.
  4. Consider the equipment. After all, that's why you're going there, isn't it? If you just wanted to do jumping jacks, you wouldn't pay the monthly fee and drive across town to do them. You stay home. The equipment that your gym carries (both quantity and quality) is what will help get you where you want to go on your fitness journey.
  5. When do you want to work out? If you love getting up early in the morning to exercise, you'd better be sure that you're gym opens before 8 am. Or if you prefer to work out at night, be sure that your gym stays open late, even on weekdays.
  6. Finally, things like cleanliness, heating, cooling, lighting, and customer service should also be considered.

Of course, nothing determines the gym that you choose more than the almighty dollar. Affordability will always be one of the most important aspects to choosing a gym. Just don't forget to take the others into account as well.
