Choosing a diet that will work for you can be tricky. With so many dieting options available it is hard to find the diet that is best for you. Luckily there are some things that you should be looking for as you find your ideal diet.

Most diets are based in the same three principles: eat less fat, fewer calories, and more fiber. You will see this combination of principles portrayed a thousand different ways in marketing schemes, advertising, cook books and endorsements. In fact, it is said that over 450 diet books are in print at any given time. Apparently those seeking to gain from your purchasing their weight loss materials are doing something right because 8 million Americans enroll in some weight loss program annually.

With so many options it is a daunting task to narrow the choices down to just one. Luckily there are four main dieting types that most diet plans fit into. They are...

  1. Using diet books, support groups, charts and graphs as aids as you take a do-it-yourself approach to your diet. This is the market sector where most diet companies focus their efforts on.
  2. Non-clinical programs that employ counselors to teach weight loss and nutrition in a group situation.
  3. Clinical programs, where licensed doctors may offer drugs or surgery
  4. One-on-one consultation with a registered dietitian

Of course an excellent source of information regarding the best diet for you will come form your personal physician. Before starting any kind of diet you should seek the counsel of your doctor. Not only can he give you information that can protect you from doing something that could be potentially harmful, but he can also give you feedback regarding what dieting methods your body is most likely going to respond best to.

With your doctor's council consider the following guidelines to follow as you look for the best diet for you. Remember that the best diets are not the most popular or widely publicized but the best diet is the one that helps you to lead a more healthy life.

Recommended guidelines when looking for a diet or weight loss program:

  • Narrow down a few diets that are appealing to you and thoroughly research them. Know the risks, the time commitment, the cost, the schedule of meetings, etc.

  • The best diets are well balanced. Use your good judgment to decide if something sounds practical or not. An all meat diet, for example, is obviously not well balanced.

  • Find a program that addressed your specific physical and dietary needs.

  • Talk about your diet options with your doctor to see if he can offer any added insight into your decision.

  • As you experience weight loss, make sure that you are aware of your overall health during the process. Just loosing weight is not a sign of a successful diet.

  • Programs that claim to produce results without eating healthy and exercising are not going to work.

  • Make sure that the program coordinators or diet creators require people with certain health restrictions or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding to have medical supervision as they diet. You want to make sure that your diet shows concern for the overall health of the individual.

  • A good diet will also incorporate exercise or will at least recommend an exercise routine be used in conjunction with the diet or healthy eating program.

The best diets will incorporate plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as beans, nuts and moderate amounts of meats or other animal products. The best diets are also coupled with an exercise routine and the determination to lead a healthier life. Even the best diet in the world will not help you loose weight unless you are willing to make sacrifices to make it work.
