One of the best things about aerobics is that there are various forms and exercises that you can do, which allows you to tailor your routine to fit your own personal needs. And another great thing about aerobics is that you can make a routine that does not require any type of equipment. But many people find that having certain types of equipment is helpful because it allows them to exercise at home, no matter what the weather is.

Here is some equipment you might need depending on what you are going to be doing.

Treadmill:
This is a perfect piece of equipment to get your heart rate up to target range. Of course you are not going to want to start off at a power walking speed, you should actually stretch first. But the treadmill is great because you can choose your own pace and walk in any kind of weather and on an even surface.

Exercise bike:
Like the treadmill you are not going to want to begin your routine with the exercise bike, but it is also a great piece of equipment to get your heart rate up to your target level. And like the treadmill the exercise bike will allow you to ride your bike in any kind of weather and you can adjust the level of intensity for the bike ride.

Stretching mat:
While this mat is not necessarily needed it can be a great addition to your aerobic equipment because it provides you with a comfortable place to form a variety of exercises, including stretching, yoga, Pilates, and aerobics.

Steps:
This item is going to be needed if you plan on doing step aerobics. Like the name suggests this type of equipment is a step, but it can be adjusted to different heights depending on your workout routine.

Heart rate monitors:
This item is not a must have but it makes it easier to figure out your target heart rate, not to mention that it is accurate. But by knowing what your target heart rate is you are able to maintain the correct level of intensity for your workout, which gives you the best results.

Dumbbells:
You can get any weight that you desire or that you are physically able to use. But dumbbells are going to take your aerobic routine to an entire different level. By using dumbbells with your normal routine you will end up working harder and sweating more, which in turn will lead you to burn more calories then ever. You can find dumbbells in weights as low as one pound and up to fifteen pounds for your aerobic workout.

DVDs and/or videos:
These are pretty much a must have if you are going to be doing aerobics from home. You can find a wide range of videos and/or DVDs. You can find videos on any style of aerobics, including step aerobics and you can find videos of different lengths. But the reason why you are going to need them if you are exercising from home is they will be able to provide you with your entire workout, which is a must to at least get you started.

Just remember that this is only a partial list of aerobic equipment that you can get, there are many other types of equipment available. But what you need will depend on what kind of a routine you are going to be doing and what the routine is going to require. But keep in mind that none of the equipment is required for aerobics; they are just added bonuses to your aerobics workout.
