If you are just getting started in learning about yoga you are probably aware of the fact that there are many different types of yoga. One of the more popular types of yoga is called Kundalini yoga, and although this form of yoga is one of the traditional forms of yoga it is just know gaining popularity in the United States. And although you may have heard about Kundalini yoga you might be unaware of what style of yoga this actually is.

In yoga terms Kundalini is the potential form of prana, which means life force, which is lying dormant in our bodies, the way this term is visualized in yoga, is that of a coiled up serpent. This type of yoga is a physical and meditative discipline that is compromised of a set of techniques that uses the mind, senses and body to create a communication between your body and mind. The main focuses of this style of yoga is on psycho-spiritual growth and the body's potential for maturation. Kundalini yoga gives special attention to the role of the spine and the endocrine system, but it also concentrates on physic centers in the body in order to generate a spiritual power that is known as kundalini energy.

Another thing that you should know about kundalini yoga is that the practice of this type of yoga consists of a number of bodily postures, expressive movements and utterances, characterological cultivations, breathing patterns, and degrees of concentration. And while some people may view this type of yoga as stretching exercises or gymnastic exercises this is far from the case, sure stretching does go along with yoga, but this style of yoga is much more physical than other styles.

The techniques that are used in this style of yoga include the following features: cross legged positions, most of the time the spine should be in a straight position, different methods that are used to control the breathing, the use of mantras, closed eyes, and mental focus, which what you normally do is focus on the sound of your breathing. While this is familiar for other types of yoga the main difference between is that kundalini directly focuses on moving energy through the charka system, which is basically stimulating the energy in the lower charkas and moving it up to the higher charkas. In most types of yoga there are seven energy centers, which are the charkas, they begin at the base of the spine and end at the top of the head. But in Kundalini yoga there is an eighth charka. This eighth charka is known as the electromagnetic filed and is sometimes referred to as "aura". The aura is actually thought to be strengthened through the practice of this style of yoga because this style of yoga claims to awaken the energy that is in the spine by activating the nerve channels that are intertwined along the spine.

Many times Kundalini yoga is referred to as the "Yoga of Awareness" because it is supposed to awaken the "kundalini" which is the unlimited potential that already exists inside of you. But one thing about this type of yoga that is surprising, especially with how popular it has become, is that it used to be practiced in secret because it was actually considered a dangerous practice by ruling powers. In fact this style of yoga was only taught to students after long initiation processes so that there commitment could be determined.

Even though you can find free instructions online for this style of yoga it is actually recommended that you do not practice this style of yoga without a credible teacher or a guide, nor without proper psychological preparation because serious mental and physical problems can occur.
