What is naked yoga? Should you do it?

If you know what yoga is, you won't need much imagination to figure out what naked yoga is. Naked yoga is simply yoga done without clothing. The practice became popular during the 1960s during the era of free love and flower children. It has lost popularity in more recent years, or at least fallen off the radar of the mainstream but it might be making a comeback. There are an increasing number of naked yoga classes in big cities such as LA and New York City and "hip" cities such as San Francisco. In fact, a San Francisco community center is currently offering naked yoga classes for both men and women.

For the practitioners of naked yoga the benefits include practicing yoga without all of those restrictive clothes, and feeling more "in touch" with ones own body. According to one naked yoga instructor, people need to learn to accept and revere their bodies and that process is hampered by covering ourselves up with clothes. Another instructor suggests that it is easier to see if students are in proper body position when they are not covering their bodies with clothes. Certainly, being able to concentrate in a roomful of naked bodies is an exercise in concentration and that is one of the tenets of yoga.

Deciding whether naked yoga is right for you is a very personal decision. There are varieties of reasons why a person might or might not feel comfortable practicing naked yoga. It might be something that you want to practice at home with your partner or spouse rather than in a group of strangers. Then again, it might be something that you want to avoid all together. If you are a nudist and enjoy other nude activities, by all means, give naked yoga a whirl. If you are a purist and don't even like sex with the lights on, you might have a heart attach just thinking about naked yoga. It certainly isn't for everyone.

If you think that you might be interested in naked yoga but you are not interested in appearing naked in front of a bunch of strangers, you might do your naked yoga at home. You can walk your self through a yoga work out, from memory or from a video tape, in the privacy of your own home. You might find that, without the audience, performing the yoga exercises in the nude is quite relaxing. Once you are able to relax and enjoy the breathing and the poses alone, you might think about bringing in more people.

You might just find that naked yoga is something that you can only enjoy when you are alone and the door is locked. Then again, you might find that naked yoga is just not something that you will ever learn to enjoy. That's fine too. Yoga is about relaxation as much as it is about exercise. There are some situations that are definitely not relaxing and don't lend them self to the practice of yoga. If you find that being naked is one of those situations, just don't do it. Most people don't.

If you really dig the idea of naked yoga, you might have a hard time finding a class. To find a class, you can check the internet. There are naked yoga workshops put on by a group called "naked workshops". If you go to their website, you might click the "contact the organizer" link and find out about workshops near you. You also might want to try putting a post on a community bulletin board such as Craig's List to try to find naked yoga partners or classes in your area.
