Having a home gym makes working out a lot easier. When you do not have to spend time driving to a gym or exposing yourself to the elements by being outdoors, you will have more time and more of a desire to exercise. When you first decide to buy items for your home gym it is best to start small and slowly expand. You first want to make sure that you ease your body into a workout routine. Doing vigorous exercises too quickly could lead to injury. Starting small is also good for the budget. You wouldn't want to buy a big fancy expensive machine if you can find less expensive ways to get the same results.

Listed below are some commonly purchased pieces of home gym equipment. Remember to start small and work your way up to the more advanced machines. Your doctor can be an excellent source of advice when it comes to finding the best equipment for you. You are encouraged to work with your doctor as you start an exercise routine especially is you have special health concerns.

Books

Books, articles and other literature can be very helpful to you as you research what type of gym equipment you think you may need. Doing your homework now can help you to avoid buyer's remorse later on down the road. Certain machines are designed for certain types of people and to work certain parts of the body. For example, if you are looking to build arm muscles than a stair stepper machine may not be the best option for you (even if it is a very popular machine).

Resistance bands

Resistance bands are relatively inexpensive and can serve as an excellent start to your home gym. Resistance bands are easy to store, use, and travel with. Resistance bands are designed to not only make muscles stronger but also to work on your tendons, ligaments, and bones. Strength from working with resistance bands allows the joints to withstand more weight or stress when, for example, you exercise more vigorously. Strong muscles help prevent osteoporosis by increasing bone mass and promote weight loss by adding muscle mass and losing fat

Steppers

Steppers come in all different types. Some people use the stairs in their own homes as stepper machines while others use a low bench, a small stool or a stair stepper machine. Stair stepper machines are one of the less expensive pieces of exercise equipment and owning one give you the added benefit of being able to watch TV while you work out.

Stationary bike

A stationary bike is one of the most common items found in home gyms. Stationary bikes are popular because they offer a low impact workout and many newer machines can offer variety by adjusting the difficulty of the workout randomly (just as if you were riding your bike up and down a natural trail). Stationary bikes are also ideal for those with back problems. Make sure that you buy a stationary bike that is capable of providing adequate resistance, adequately adjusts for proper fit on the bicycle and that will fit in the area that you have once it is assembled.

Treadmill

Treadmills are the most common item found in a home gym. Treadmills are so popular because they can help you to get the total body workout that you are looking for without having to deal with the elements outside, the sound of cars, or even health risk factors like pollution.

Elliptical machine

Elliptical machines will actually allow you to burn a similar number of calories as jogging but without the risk of injury to the back, knees, hips, or ankles. Because your feet never leave the pedals, this low-impact machine is easier on the joints. An elliptical can be compared to running in midair rather than having your body be what absorbs all the impact.

Multi-function trainer

A multi-function trainer or machine that is sometimes referred to as a home gym, is a piece of equipment where you can do multiple different exercises on one machine. Usually for the serious athlete or exercise enthusiast a multi-function trainer is for advanced workouts not for the novice.
