What you need to get started in yoga

One of the greatest things about yoga is that there are not very many things that you are going to need to get started. In fact most of the styles of yoga simply require proper clothing (no shoes) and a yoga mat or other non skid surface. But depending on what style of yoga you are taking you might need some extra equipment such as yoga balls, chairs, blocks or straps.

Here are the things that you are going to need to get started in yoga.

Number one:

The most important thing that you are going to need to get started in yoga is the proper clothing. In fact this is probably the most important thing that you are going to need when it comes to practicing yoga. When it comes to choosing clothes for yoga you have many options on where you can get them. Some of your options are making the clothes yourself, using clothes you already have, having them custom made for you, or purchasing them at a yoga store or a large retail store. But no matter where you go to purchase your yoga clothes you are going to want to make sure that the clothes are comfortable. You also want to make sure that the clothes are made of a breathable type of fabric (for when you sweat) and that the clothes will hold their shape after you have washed them a few times. You also want to pick clothes that are not going to restrict your movements in any way; basically you are going to want them to fit like a second skin. One of the most popular types of yoga clothes is spandex because of how comfortable they are and how they conform to your body to act like a second skin.

Number two:
The next thing that you are going to need is some place that is quiet for you to practice. The reason behind this is that you are going to want to have as few distractions as possible so that you can concentrate on your yoga. Having quiet makes it easier to drive all thoughts from your mind, and can help you focus on your breathing.

Number three:
Another thing that you are going to need to start practicing yoga is a padded, non skid surface. This can be either a sticky yoga mat or regular carpet. The main point is that you don't want the mat or carpet to move while you are doing the various positions because this can cause you to lose your balance or obtain a serious injury. Some types of yoga require more movement than others so having a stable place to practice the positions is safer all around.

Number four:
If you are going to be practicing yoga at home you are going to want to make sure that you have some type of video or DVD for beginners, intermediate or advanced yoga, which means you are also going to need a television, VCR and/or DVD player in your quiet room. This is necessary so you can learn the physical and breathing exercises that are required. You also might want to have some of these videos even if you are taking a yoga class so that you can continue to practice yoga from home.

Number five:
Depending on what style of yoga you are going to be taking you also might need certain props, such as chairs, blocks, straps, or balls. If you are taking a yoga class you should be sure to ask what kind of equipment you will need. If you are learning from home with the help of videos you can research the style of yoga you are taking to find out if any props are required.
