It also is thought to indicate a 'soft' yoga style. Yet its roots are, as its translated name implies, formed on a strong, demanding yoga. Hatha yoga works with the yoga postures as the means for perfecting the attunement of the physical body
- Iyengar: this type of yoga is focused mostly on proper body alignment. Poses are held for long periods of time and the movement from one posture to another is slower than some other styles. Since it focuses so much on correct body alignment, it is also a good starting point for beginners before moving into faster paced styles.
- Ashtanga - This is a very fast paced and intense style of yoga. It goes through a series of postures connected with proper breathing techniques. Each posture flows directly into the next one, so it is very demanding on your body. Ashtanga can be a good choice for physically fit individuals who like a challenge.
- Pattabhi Jois: this type of yoga teaches that it is through the combination and co-ordination of breathing and movement that the internal cleansing takes place. It works with the union of three points of attention - posture, breathing and the gazing point. The gazing point being the deep focus on the work.
- Power Yoga: this is an intense workout that is a form of Ashtanga. The positions do not necessarily follow a particular sequence every time. You move from one posture to another which requires a great deal of strength and stamina. Power yoga is best suited for athletic, well-conditioned individuals. Even if you are in excellent shape, you will find power yoga to be very challenging
The best way to determine which yoga is best, is simply to determine what you want to get out of your yoga workout. If you're looking for ways to loose weight, you may want to investigate power yoga. If you prefer to improve your body alignment, maybe Ashtanga is right for you. Or, if you want to focus more on your spiritual side, maybe a type of yoga like Hatha of Kundalini would be better. Basically, there is not a "best" type of yoga. It's all depends on your personal preference.
