Aerobics are a fantastic exercise choice for any teen. Aerobics offers a number of health benefits that are particularly important for people in each and every age group. However, aerobics also offers particular benefits that are specifically important and helpful for teens, helping them live a happy, productive, and fulfilling life while improving their health, both physically and emotionally.

What is aerobics?

When people talk about "aerobics", they are usually referring to choreographed aerobic dance routines. Think of people in legwarmers in front of mirrors. There are a number of different types of aerobic dance; one of the most popular forms of aerobic dance is step aerobics. In step aerobics, you use a small step along with your workout routine, which consists of a number of dance and other more athletic steps set to fast-paced music. Combining your aerobic dance with small weights that you can either strap on to your wrists and/or ankles or that you hold will enable you not only to benefit from your aerobic workout, but will also help you improve your muscle tone and strength. Aerobic dance today is less dance-oriented and more athletics oriented, combining elements of dance, kick-boxing, and other martial arts moves.

Aerobics provides a number of important health benefits. Here are just a few of those benefits that aerobics brings to anyone:

  • a stronger and larger heart

  • greater endurance

  • stronger and more flexible blood vessels

  • stronger lungs

  • improved flexibility

  • improved muscle tone

  • increased metabolism

  • improved weight control

  • improved muscle tone

  • greater ability to deal with stress

  • greater emotional stability

  • higher quality of sleep

Everybody should engage in at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day, whether aerobic dance, hiking, brisk walking, jogging, swimming, biking, or another activity. You must talk to your doctor before beginning any program of exercise so that you can make sure that you aren't engaging in exercise that will put your own health in danger. You should also pair your aerobic exercise with a healthy diet.

Why teens should do aerobics

Teens benefit from regular aerobic exercise just as much as everyone else. However, several studies have shown that teens can gain particular benefits from aerobic exercise that make those difficult adolescent years more manageable.
All teens should engage in aerobics to keep themselves healthy physically. However, aerobics are especially important for teens for their emotional and mental health, as well. In addition, a study that appeared in Pediatrics showed that teens who engage in physical activity, such as aerobics, are less likely to participate in risky behavior (examples are sex, drinking, and smoking) and are more likely to have positive habits, such as more sleep, sleep of a greater quality, better self-esteem, higher grades, and improved emotional stability. Here are ten more benefits for teens who do aerobics, or another form of regular physical activity.

  1. Less likely to engage in sex, particularly unprotected sex.

  2. Teens who do aerobics are less likely to smoke.

  3. Teens who do aerobics are less likely to drive while they are drunk, or to get drunk in the first place.

  4. Teens who do aerobics are less likely to use illegal drugs (excepting marijuana).

  5. Teens who do aerobics are more likely to attend school regularly.

  6. Teens who do aerobics are more likely to wear their seatbelts.

  7. Teens who do aerobics are less likely to have low self-esteem.

  8. Teens who do aerobics are more likely to perform well in math and science.

  9. Teens who do aerobics are more likely to sleep at least eight hours a night.

  10. Teens who do aerobics are more likely to help around the house and to manage an outside job while in school.
