Yoga for beginners, what does it include?

Are you just beginning to get interested in yoga? A lot of people are intimidated from starting up in yoga because they don't quite know what beginning yoga includes. Other people have misconceptions that yoga is a religion, when really it fits more in line with a philosophy. There are a couple things that are included in beginner yoga that you should be aware of. Here are some of the things that are generally included in yoga for beginners:
|
|
- Yoga postures: When you are just starting up in yoga, you will be involved in doing a lot of different postures. These postures can vary a little bit, depending on the type of yoga that you do. However, some of the main yoga postures are standing postures, seated postures, back bends, forward bends, side bends, and twists. In addition there are also reclining postures, which are are often popular to do at the end of a yoga session. Reclining postures often help with cooling down the body and restoring energy.
Twisting poses are some of the popular postures to help energize and free up the body. As a beginner, you will be involved in doing some twisting poses. However, if you are pregnant and are a beginner, you should make sure that you don't twist in a way that will put pressure on your abdomen.
Balancing postures also are a popular form of posture for someone who is beginning yoga. Don't worry - as a beginner, your balancing postures will not be too difficult! As you become more advanced in yoga, you will be required to do more difficult postures. But, as a beginner, you will be doing balancing postures to help you to develop better control and mastery of your body. Balancing postures also help to develop agility, lightness, and overall strength.
- Breathing exercises: Yoga for beginners will also include some type of breathing exercises. Breathing is a very important aspect of yoga, because it helps to relieve stress and also helps people to build control. There are a couple forms of breathing that you could do in your beginning yoga exercises. Abdominal breathing is one of the more popular forms of breathing in yoga. Abdominal breathing happens when you sit in a cross legged position on the floor, or you can lie flat on your back. You want your abdomen to expand and contract while you breathe, instead of having your rib cage lift up and down. However, rib cage breathing is another breathing exercise which is the opposite of abdomen breathing. In rib cage breathing, your chest heaves up and down instead of your abdomen. As you get more advanced in yoga, you might learn how to do alternate nostril breathing or complete breathing. However, most beginners start with abdomen or rib cage breathing.
- Meditation: The last thing that beginning yoga usually includes is some type of meditation. The only real exception to this rule is if you are involved in beginning power yoga, which generally does not include meditation. Through meditation, you will focus all of your attention and mental energies on a single subject. When you achieve this level of meditation and focus, this means that there is an integration of the body, mind, and the present moment all into one. This can take a lot of time and practice, so don't get frustrated if you can't meditate well right away! You will continually have to develop your meditation skills as you continue through yoga. However, as a beginner to yoga, it is important that you start practicing meditation early.
These are the three basic things that are usually included in basic yoga. Your yoga instructor or class may have some additional variations, but generally you can expect some form of these three parts of yoga.
