5 ways to increase fire safety in your home:

Fires are very dangerous and very "far away." Few people ever think that their own home could start on fire. Fires are things that happen in distant places, to other people, but not to you. Your own home cannot start on fire. Unfortunately, this is what many people believe. Maybe they say they know it could happen to them, but they are not really thinking that it is going to. You know that they do not think it will happen to them because they do not prepare themselves incase it did. Fire safety is something that everyone should prepare for. Whether your home does or does not start on fire you should always be prepared. Here are some ways that you can increase fire safety in your home:

First: Always have good smoke detectors in your home. You should check them regularly to make sure they are working properly. Over time they can stop working, even if they have not been used; probably especially if they have not been used. This means that you need to consistently check them. They should always have fresh batteries in them and they should be hung in wise places. For example, in the kitchen would be a great place to hang one because fires are very likely to occur there. In reality they should be hung in every room of your house. If a fire were to start in the basement where there were no detectors you would lose half your house before you realized that you were even in danger. On the other hand, if the basement is installed with detectors you would know there was a fire instantly and could stop it before it spreads.

Second: Always have an escape plan prepared. You should have an escape plan for every room in the house. A fire can happen any time, anywhere. Whether your child is in the bathroom, their bedroom or the living room, they should know how to escape from each place. You may not think that it would be likely for someone to be in the bathroom during a fire because bathroom visits are usually pretty short. But it does not take long for a fire to start and spread. It would be terrible if your child were stuck in there, not knowing what to do or how to get out.

Third: You should have a wise placement of your kitchen utensils such as your oven, microwave etc. You should have these located away from very flammable walls as well as the ceiling. You should always be sure that they are in good condition. If you experience any problems with these utensils you should be sure to fix them right away. Even if they do not seem like serious problems you should fix them. You do not want to take any risks.

Fourth: You should always make sure that your children are safe. Children should never be left unattended at home. A fire could happen very quickly, it would not matter how fast your errand was. If left unattended they would probably get scared and not know what to do. They should always have either you there or a babysitter. Your children as well as your babysitter should know you escape routes and plans incase of a fire.

Fifth: You should always be careful when smoking at home. Before discarding cigarettes you should always make sure that they are completely put out. They are great tools for starting fires. You should also never smoke in your bed. There are many people who have set beds and then homes on fire simply from smoking in bed accidentally doing something wrong with the cigarette. You should always make sure to have smoke trays in your home and always make sure that they are somewhere where they cannot tip over. Cigarettes are one thing that you want to be very careful with.
