6 ideas for organizing your garage

Are you one of those people who have to park a car in the driveway because you have no room to park in the garage? Or do you just want to have more floor space in your garage? If you answered yes here are some ideas to help you organize your garage.

Idea one:
Before you can organize your garage you need to get the motivation to clean it out, the good news is you can probably get it done in one. The first step to organizing your garage is to pick a place to store the items that you are going to keep. This should be a large flat area, such as your drive way or front lawn. Be sure to check your weather forecast ahead of time so you can pick the best time to do this without running your items.

Idea two:
Start early in the day, the sooner you start the sooner you will be done. By putting it off until later in the day you are running the risk of not finishing because it will get dark and who wants to work in the dark. Also when tackling this project enlist the help of your family, this will help to get the project done faster and it will help to teach your kids the importance of organizing. Not to mention the fact if they help to clean it up they will continue to keep it clean because of the work they put into it in the first place.

Idea three:
Work from the outside in. Start with the corner closest to the driveway and move in towards the house. If you have a detached garage you will just work from the corner closest to the driveway towards the back of the garage. When removing items from your garage figure out what you are doing with them immediately. Do not wait until later to make the decision that is how the stuff got there in the first place.

Idea four:
For the items you plan on keeping you should separate them by category as soon as you move it from the garage. Putting everything into one huge pile only makes your work harder because you are going to have to go through it again when you are organizing your items. The most common groups you will have are sports equipment, gardening tools and supplies, car care products, camping gear, and tools.

Idea five:
Part of organizing your garage is getting rid of items, whether you wish to have a garage sale, give it to charity, and throw it away or using a combination of these ideas you need to be organized for that. Keep your trash can nearby for items that you wish to throw away, if the item is too big to throw in your trash can place it next to it and take it to the landfill as soon as possible. For items that you wish to sell or give away place them in separate boxes that are clearly marked. The items that you are selling should be stored in the front of your garage until your yard sale takes place, items that are being given to charity should be dropped off as soon as possible or call and arrange a time for them to pick it up.

Idea six:
Once you have gotten your garage empty you now need to add some organizing tools to store your belongings. You can have free standing shelves, hooks that hang from the rafters, built in shelves, cupboards, tool chests, and pegboard to name a few ideas. What you choose will depend on what your needs are and what kind of budget you have to spend on organizing your garage. You might also need to use more than one storage method. For example tool chests are great for storing tools, but pegboard is also another great way to store your tools. By putting hooks into your rafters you can hang up bikes so that they are up and out of the way. Plastic boxes are also another great way to organize your garage because you can store numerous small or medium items in one bin and they won't get spread out everywhere.

Now comes the time to put everything away. If you followed the above ideas this part should be a breeze.
