A mold free home

backsplash63500621.jpgMold in a home is common, but that does not make it healthy. In fact, if mold gets too bad, it becomes toxic, and can lead to asthma, other breathing problems, and much more. Here's what you need to know to keep your home mold-free:

First, mold grows in moist places. So, if you want to have a mold free home, make sure you keep it low moisture. You have to keep humidity below 50 percent in basements. So, how do you do that? You start by improving your outside grading and drainage, and make sure your gutters do not get clogged. Other ways to reduce moisture in your home is to run the fan, etc. when you shower, clean up spills and make sure your faucets do not have leaks.

Second, don't give mold a chance. One thing you can do to reduce mold, and to obtain a mold free home is to ventilate. If you have damp spaces you need to have fans, and ventilation that will help you to reduce moisture so that there is not enough to sustain a mold problem. Mold feeds off moisture. So, create an environment conducive to mold and you will get mold, create one that doesn't give mold a chance, and your home will be mold free.

Third, clean regularly, and use mold-inhibiting cleaners. It is most important to clean the bathrooms and kitchens with mold-inhibitors. These are the two rooms that get mold most readily, so you want to try and not just clean them regularly, but put up a second defense against mold. In addition, consider painting these areas with paint that has a mold inhibitor in it as well. Just make sure it is an EPA-approved paint for indoor use.

Fourth, avoid using wooden shelves; metal or plastic shelves are less susceptible to mold. Certain materials are more inclined to let mold grow on them, and spread mold. So, use metal or plastic to store your things, don't use cardboard boxes, etc. This will help you avoid mold in your home.

Fifth, heat your basement. It is an area that tends to be prone to mold growth. Make sure you heat to at least 60 degrees, even if you are not using them. Basically, a basement is likely to form mold because condensation will form. A warmer space is less likely to create condensation, so less likely to create mold.

There are a lot of ways to have a mold free home, but the most important thing you can do is keep your eyes open. Most homes that have mold problems have them because no one noticed the mold until it became a problem. So, check your basement regularly for dampness, and look for leaks in faucets, and any area that is going to be prone to mold growth.
