A Slow Summer Afternoon on the Porch
A porch is a great way to take advantage of spring and summer weather in relative comfort. Outdoor living starts on your porch patio or deck, so when winter is done, it's time to spruce up your outdoor living space. Here are some tips to get your outdoor living spaces looking spruce and ready for some serious summer fun.

Tip #1: Spring Clean.
Every living space in your home gets a spring cleaning, so don't forget your outdoor living spaces too. Many porches and patios can be cleaned thoroughly with a bucket of soapy water and a stiff bristle brush. If getting on hands and knees isn't your style, try renting a power-washer for a day. Your porch is usually taking a beating from the elements anyway, so a wash with a good sprayer won't be much of a change from the ordinary. Clean off the junk that has accumulated over the winter, move the furniture out to the lawn, detach any hanging planters and move them out too, then give your porch a good bath. While you have the power-washer, you may want to consider spraying your home's siding and walks as well and add them to your spring cleaning list. If your outdoor furniture can withstand a power-wash, use it on them to, otherwise, soap them down well and let them dry in the sun.
Tip #2: Repair and Update.
Your outdoor living space has probably seen some ware and tare over the last few months, so be sure to inspect it thoroughly for needed repairs including the framing under the floor of your space. If you replace the floor boards with wood, you should paint all sides and the ends of the slats with an oil-based porch and deck enamel paint to protect it from rotting. Touch-up the paint, give your doorbell a good cleaning and oiling and make any updates you think would be appropriate. Replace your outdoor lighting as needed and seal your porch/patio/deck materials against water damage. If your porch is concrete, you can update its look and appeal by staining or stamping it. You can get your outdoor living space looking like new with a little paint, stain, oil, and elbow grease.
Tip #3: Get a New Door Mat.
Getting the ambiance of your outdoor space right can take some time. Look at it as an extension of your house, albeit one that needs a little more durable materials. Be sure to wash any hangings, furniture coverings or rugs before you put them back on the porch. If needed, replace any accessories that are worn or out-dated. A new door mat every year can keep your front porch looking spruce and tidy rather than letting the old one take an even bigger beating now that it is worn out by a year's worth of foot traffic.
Tip #4: Time for Planters.
A hanging or floor planter for your porch can give it much needed color and life, so be sure to check into planting flowers for your porch that will bloom all summer long and give fragrance and life to your space. A deck or back patio is also a good place for an herb planter. Check into all your options when finding ways to bring vivacity to your outdoor living space.
