Many people struggle with how to add color to a dull room. Fortunately, you need not be a skilled painter or a decorator in order to add color to a room in your home. Here are a few simple and yet diverse tips to help you add color to a dull room...

1. Paint one wall

Painting is the obvious answer to adding color to a dull room, but what if you do not want to start painting all the rooms in your house? You will find that you can add a real punch of color by painting just one wall of a room in your house. Painting the wall on one side of the room directs the eye to that way creating a focal point. A good way to choose a focal wall is to decide which wall in a room has the most interest. Sometimes the wall with a niche or with a fireplace makes for the best focal wall. You can choose a darker tone than what you typically have in your home of be inspired by a color in your favorite rug or blanket.

2. Use pillows

One of the simplest methods for adding color to a room is to use throw pillows. Throw pillows are relatively inexpensive and easy enough to make yourself. You can choose your pillow color by pulling from a color already in the upholstery or by simply adding a pillow in a contrasting color to what colors you already have in the room.

3. Go green

Adding plants not only improves the air quality in a room, but it can add a good amount of color. Green plants are great, but you can be even more creative by adding flowering plants as well. If you have a history with plants that is less than good, ask your local nursery to suggest plants that thrive indoors and are easy to care for.

4. Light it up

If you are apprehensive about adding color, add light instead. Sometimes additional lights, like lamps, can enhance the colors that you may already have in the room and give a space more life. Lamps are also important accessories in that you can find lampshades in a number of shapes, sizes, and colors. You can even make your own lamp out of a pot or vase. Make-it-yourself lamp kits are sold at most hardware shops.

5. Use the floor

The floor can be a great place to add color if you can find a floor rug that you like. Putting a rug under a coffee table or on top of a painted floor can be a fun way to add color in a less obvious way. If you are planning a more dedicated floor change, you can bring color into a room with floor tiles.

6. Recover a chair or add a cover to a sofa

Recovering a small chair with a padded seat is simple. All you need to do is stretch the new fabric over the existing fabric and cushion and staple the fabric in place. There are many options when it comes to finding covers for your larger sitting pieces. Bring new life to an outdated chair and bring more color into the room at the same time.

8. Bring out your inner painter

A colorful piece of art can be simple to create; all you need are some paints, brushes, and maybe some painter's tape. To create a colorful and modern piece of art, buy some canvas at the craft store, tape off some lines of different thicknesses, and use the various colors of paints to make stripes. This very simple art project can compliment just about any décor, is affordable, and can bring a good deal of color into a room.
