Attic insulation

roof36602210.jpgAttic insulation seems to be the new thing. It is very popular, and because it is the "green" thing to do, not to mention that many companies offer rebates, people are starting to wonder if it is really all that it is talked up to be. Here is what you ought to know about attic insulation:

Insulation helps you go green:
More insulation means less need to use resources such as your heater and air conditioner to get your home to the temperature you would like. Because of this, you will be helping to save the planet by using less. In addition, insulation now comes in more environmentally friendly forms. So, you can insulate your home with recycled materials, and while doing your part for mother nature and our beautiful earth.

Cost savings:
The biggest reason there is a lot of hype about insulation in the attic is that it can really help you save money. If you do not have any attic insulation, or it is a low R-value, or is old, it may be costing you a lot more to cool and heat your house than it should. If you put in attic insulation, it can cut your bill by 40%. Over the course of your life time in paying for heating and cooling, that is significant savings. Thus, the cost versus cost savings is huge enough to encourage people to go for insulation in the attic.

Rebates:
Many places add incentive through rebates for every square foot of insulation you install in your attic, based on the R-value of the insulation you install. For example, you can get fifteen cents a square foot. This makes it more affordable, plus more tax efficient, thus it is incentive to get insulation.

So, now you know the reasons people are excited about attic insulation, but what are some of the cautions? In general, just remember, before installing any type of insulation in your attic, follow these steps:
1. Make sure you seal any attic to home air leaks, and insulation is not going to stop airflow.
2. You want your exhaust fans to be duct to the outside of your home, and a box to cover fan housing on the attic side, one that is well sealed.
3. You want to cover any openings into the attic area with plywood, but also seal the attic side of the ceiling.
4. If you have a fireplace, be sure to seal around the chimney and framing with a high-temperature caulk or furnace cement so that it does not melt.
5. Use caulk to seal up any gaps or holes, and use the expanding foam or strips to seal anything that is large.
6. Make sure you meet fire safety clearance requirements for heat producing equipment found in the attic such as flues, chimneys, etc.
7. Make sure when you install insulation that the insulation doesn't block soffit vents to allow for attic ventilation.
8. Make sure that the roof is not leaking, and that there is proper ventilation in the attic, making any necessary repairs BEFORE putting in insulation, as wet insulation is ineffective, and can damage your home.

If you do these things, your attic insulation will be more effective, and thus give you all the afore mentioned benefits.
