Backyard patios

remodeling32192502.jpgIt once was that the patio or deck, or backyard space of your home was outside, but today, it is a place where the indoors move out. Your backyard and patio have become an extension of your home, and there are a lot of ways you can take advantage of this space and make it a great extension of your home. The following are some great tips for transforming a basic backyard patio into a comfortable, inviting space you use as much as you do your living room.

Tip one:
Furniture. You aren't going to spend a lot of time on your patio if there is nowhere for you to sit and relax. Investing in some great patio furniture is a great idea. You do not have to spend a fortune, but you should buy yourself a nice, sturdy table, some chairs, possibly a few lounge chairs, and some with cushions so that they are nice and comfortable. The furniture for your patio, much like the furniture in your home, allows you to express your personality. So, choose chair cushions, etc. with patterns and colors that go along with your home, and that are a good representation of you.

Tip two:
Shade. One of the reasons people do not spend more time outdoors is that it can be hot and uncomfortable, without the climate control an AC provides you in your home, it can get too uncomfortable. One way to remedy this is to provide some shade for the space to help keep it cooler. You can do this with expensive options like retractable canopies, or buy building expensive coverings, etc. Or you can simply get a patio set with an umbrella. If you have a roof to your patio, consider buying some bamboo type roller blinds that can be rolled down like a wall to block sun on whatever side it is coming from. If you have the money, a great option as well is to add a ceiling fan. It is a great way to cool the area, and can be put in for under $500 typically. It also looks really nice.

Tip three:
Warm up the space. A patio or deck is usually a slab of concrete or a plank of wood. Getting a great outdoor throw rug to warm the space up a little is a great idea, and can transform the space for a really low cost.

Tip four:
Potted plants. Because it is outside, you want to keep it like the outside, but a fun way to make your backyard patio more homey is to add some potted plants, flowers, herbs, etc. around. The pots can act as great accent pieces of décor. You can get colorful pots that pull your decorating together, or simple pots that are understated.

Tip five:
A grill. Nothing brings the indoors out the way a nice outdoor kitchen will. If you are spending money to transform your deck, consider adding a full outdoor kitchen, with a built in grill, small sink, and built in fridge. If you want to spend less, just get a nice grill to cook up some fun summer meals on.
