Buying flowers for your garden

children30344134.jpgWhen you plant a flower garden, the most important part of the flower garden is buying the flowers to put in your garden. There are two types of flowers that you can buy for your flower garden, annuals and perennials. Your annuals are flowers that will grow and die in one season, while your perennials are will grow and bloom for many years. To buy the best flowers for your garden you will need to know how to buy both types of flowers.

Here are some tips to follow when buying annuals.

Tip one:
You will want to choose cool-season annuals for winter in milder climates and for spring and fall displays. For flowers that are, blooming from late spring to early fall you will want to select warm-season annuals.

Tip two:
While starting a garden from seeds is less, expensive it does take longer and requires more labor, so you might want to buy starter plants. No matter what you are buying, you will want to purchase the seeds from catalogs or nursery packs, if you are purchasing seedlings you will want to buy them from your local nursery to ensure they are healthy upon purchase. You can also start your own seedlings at home, if you prefer that route.

Tip three:
You want to research each plant that you are planting to ensure that it is getting enough sun or shade. There are a few annuals that will do well in shade, but for the most part annuals will need to be planted in the full sun.

Tip four:
When choosing seedlings make sure they are healthy when buying them from nurseries. If you are ordering the plants from the nursery or online, you want to make sure that, there is a satisfaction guarantee on your order just in case they look unhealthy or are unhealthy when you receive them. At the nursery, you will want to examine them for healthy green leaves that are just starting to come out, avoid the flowers with many yellow leaves. You also want unopened flowers for the most part and want to avoid any plants that are root-bound, which is where brown roots are coming out the bottom of the container.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when buying perennials.

Tip one:
You can shop for perennials nearly year-round because you will find them in nursery containers or in small pots inside of stores. When it comes to perennials, it takes time to start them from seeds and some of them will only sprout from a seed with special care, so this can be a rather advanced project. Be prepared if this is the route you want to take.

Tip two:
You want to try to plant most of your perennials in the early spring or early fall. The reason for this is that the earlier you buy the plants ion the growing season the small the container is going to be, which means the plant is going to be smaller and less expensive. Perennials that are in 4-inch pots are the easiest to establish in the garden, even if they do look small.

Tip three:
You might run into a limited variety of perennials being offered if you only visit local nurseries and garden centers. To get the biggest variety you want to look at specialty perennial dealers that offer mail order or direct mail catalogs.

Tip four:
When buying perennials you want to look for plants that are healthy. They will need to have green leaves that are just coming out on a branch or right by the soil. You want to avoid plants that are root-bound or have yellow, limp leaves. To be sure, of the color you should only purchase perennials that are in bloom. If color is not a problem, you can purchase them anytime of the year.
