Car maintenance tips

carpart67965274.jpgWhen you buy a car, it is a big purchase, often one you are going to make payments on for years to come. Properly maintaining that car helps make those payments worthwhile, and gives you peace of mind that your investment is actually going to be worth it. You do not have to be a car mechanic to do the little things that will help you keep your car in good repair. Here are some basic car maintenance tips that will help your car look better and last longer.

1. Take a few minutes to read your owner's manual. It is going to tell you all kinds of useful things about your car, such as what grade of gas and motor oil you should be using to get the optimal performance and best gas mileage. It will tell you what inflation is best for your tires, and a number of other useful things. So, don't just leave it in the glove box to collect dust, take the time to read through it, or at least browse it to ensure you are treating your car, and operating it, the way you are supposed to.

2. Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to improve your gasoline mileage by around 3%. In addition, properly inflated tires results in less wear to the tire tread, and longer life for those tires. It can also mean less abuse to your brake system, and other systems of your car. So, it is important to do what the manufacturer recommends for tire inflation, and to regularly check the alignment.

3. Part of maintaining your car is getting regular maintenance done at a qualified, certified mechanic. You should get regular oil changes, and get regular engine tune-ups and car maintenance checks. Doing so will result in your fluid levels always being where they should be, keeping an eye out for potential problems, keeping belts in good repair, keep spark plugs clean, and brakes from dragging, and more. It is best to use the same mechanic or place each time so that they can compare the record, and keep track of the needs of the car.

4. Replacing filters is the next step to proper car maintenance, air filters and fuel filters should be replaced regularly to keep gas mileage at its best, and to help protect your engine. If you don't replace them, your engine can grow dirty, and it can lead to problems. So, it is worth the $30 or so to get a new one each time the oil change place recommends them. If you are not sure how often they should be changed, just take a look at your owner's manual, or pull the filter out and determine if it is dirty enough to change.

5. Protect your car's exterior by covering it, or parking it in a garage, and make sure any time you get a chip, ding, crack, etc. in the paint of windshield that you get it fixed right away.
