Caring for wood furniture

Wood is very durable, and with proper care, your wood furniture can last you several years. Not that it will be in style that long, but it will at least still be sturdy. The following are some tips for caring for wood furniture to get it to last longer, and stay in mint condition:

  1. Dust all wood furniture at least once or twice a week. Dust can be very damaging to wood furniture. Always dust from the top to the bottom, and do so before you vacuum floors, etc. Dusting should be done with the appropriate dusting spray, and best cloth or duster for the particular wood you have.
  2. Vacuum all wood furniture once a week. Vacuuming wood furniture helps to rid it of any unwanted dust you missed. It is also more effective at getting into the grain of the wood and cleaning out dust and dirt.
  3. Use coasters. If you have wood furniture, you will want to be sure to protect it properly from damage. You will want to do this by using coasters for drinks, tablecloths on tables, and runners, etc. on other wood furniture that could be damaged. Wood is very durable, but that does not mean you should damage it when you could take precautions to protect it. So, use liners for wood drawers, use cloths and if something is damaged, you will want to repair it immediately.
  4. Polish scratches. Depending on the type of wood, you may see scratches etc. The hardness of the wood will determine how easily it scratches, and how easy it is to get scratches out. If your wood furniture does happen to get scratched, whether by accident, or neglect, it is best to polish out scratches as quickly as possible. This keeps them from lengthening.
  5. Keep out of direct sunlight. Wood can warp if it gets too much sunlight, and often the stains on the wood can fade. If the furniture you have is in direct sunlight, you will want to consider sealing it every year or so, and applying fresh coats of stain on it.
  6. Do not let too much moisture get to them. If you live in a humid climate, you are probably very aware of the damage humidity and moisture can do to wood furniture. However, you will want to do your best to keep your wood furniture out of too moist of areas. For example, do not store your wood furniture in your basement, especially if there are leaks. If water gets on your wood, dry it quickly, and prevent more moisture or water from getting on it.
  7. Make sure you do not have pests. Termites, and other pests, can damage wood furniture. So, treat your wood furniture, spray it so that you do not have pests, and if you notice any pests, exterminate them immediately. You will not want your beautiful wood furniture to be ruined by bugs.
  8. Caring for your wood furniture is not difficult, and if you take a few moments each week to protect and care for your furniture, it will stay in better repair, and will last longer. You can be proud that you know how to care for your wood furniture. Even if you do nothing else, be sure to dust your wood furniture regularly. Dust it with appropriate dusters.
