fridge37475727.jpg
Getting your food fresh for a long time is a challenge. We can sometimes forget about food that we have or don't have time to cook what we were planning on and then by the time we do have time to cook that delicious meal, the food we bought is rotten. So we all need a way to keep it fresh for as long as we can and one that can be adjusted to our lifestyle if we need it. Here are some tips that everyone can follow.

One way to keep foods fresher longer is to buy the "Debbie Meyer Green Bags". You might have seen them advertized on television. They generally do keep your food fresher as long as you keep the bags open. Don't bunch them up in the fridge but let the top of the bags stay open. If the bags are closed all the way the special bags won't work and you'll end up with rotten vegetables anyways. They aren't too expensive but there are even easier ways to keep produce fresh.

Gas versus electric cook tops

When choosing your cook top for your house, you have the choice between gas and electric. Each type of power has benefits and drawbacks:

Gas cook tops-
Gas cook tops are convenient in that they give you more precise temperature control than electric cook tops.
Kitchens with gas appliances must have proper ventilation.
To have a gas appliance you have to have a gas line, so if you do not already have a gas line, you will have to re-plumb your house. This can be costly or impractical. So, unless you have it, this is not a really viable option.
You will have to talk to your local gas company to get a gas cook top.
With gas cook tops you can choose between a variety of fuel types. You can choose propane (liquefied petroleum gas), instead of natural gas, or you can choose natural gas. However, if you choose propane, you would get a propane tank, you can buy one, or rent one.

How to care for your dishwasher

Wondering what you can do to improve your dishwasher's performance? Here are a few tips on how to clean and maintain your dishwasher for years to come.

Tip one:
You need to keep the areas that are hard to reach clean of build up. The build up can turn into bacteria which can then contaminate your clean dishes. The hard to reach areas include the door jam on the dishwasher door, the top of the sides of the dishwasher and the very top of the dishwasher. Since these parts are plastic and can cause bacteria to build up you will want to use a disinfectant when cleaning these areas. You should also wipe down the front of your dishwasher every time you do dishes. Use a damp washcloth and soapy dishwater to wipe it down.

How do water softeners work?

How does a water softener work? First, we have to look at what soft water (vs. hard water) is.
Hard water is water that has significant amounts of either calcium or magnesium.
These chemicals are generally in the tap water in your home if it is not filtered or softened. Detergent's main function is to soften water and its secondary job is to actually clean.
Soft water is essentially water that has the calcium and magnesium removed from it.
The most rudimentary elements to softening water are done in two simple steps:
1) Introduce chemicals to the water that calcium and magnesium are attracted to, which will then form new chemicals within the water.

Do I need a water filter?

Drinking water is vital to everyone. Safe drinking water is a luxury that most people have, but how "safe" is safe drinking water. Do I really need a water filter?

The most typical place drinking water comes from is a stream or river that originated high within a mountain. On the trip down from the mountain, the water picks up minerals and hard metals from the rocks and surfaces that it travels over. In many of these situations it goes through man made dams and other structures used to create electricity. After a long journey, it arrives in a purification plant owned by the city or county that provides it to you.
