In most cases, the shingles are only going to need to be replaced when they get broken, which can happen over time because the shingles get old and fall apart. Shingles can also get broken from vandalism or even windstorms. Not only can your shingles get broken but also some of them can even turn up missing over time. Rainstorms can also damage your shingles because over time the wood shingles can begin rotting.

However, it only works if the roof is in working order and your gutters are clear and in good condition to do their job. Obviously if you have problems with your roof, water will end up inside your home, and if your gutters are backed up, they will eventually overflow and pull away from the roof leaving your home vulnerable to water damage.
