Plant watering tips

watering32299789.jpgWatering plants is a task that may seem simple, but you may be surprised to find out that 80% of gardening problems are due to overwatering. Overwatering not only drowns and kills your plants, but it also wastes water, especially if what you are overwatering is on an automatic watering system. Sprinkler systems are not perfect. Automatic timers and sprinkler heads are difficult to maneuver in just the right way to ensure that every drop of water is being distributed to where it is needed most. However, there are automated systems that you can buy that consider the specific needs of your lawn, calculating slope, water absorption and systems that even include a wireless download of weather conditions to determine how much water is necessary for your lawn. All this information is then translates into directions given to your sprinkler system. By determining you specific watering needs and cutting back when watering isn't necessary, it is estimated that you can cut your water usage by as much as 30% and still maintain a beautiful and healthy lawn and garden area. If an entire automated watering system is beyond your reach, they now make standard sprinkler heads that you attach to your hose and that use a programmable disk to avoid watering driveway or deck. The sprinkler simply works off the pattern that you give it.

The best salads, however, cannot be bought, but you can grow them quite easily, even if your space is limited. Fresh salad greens plucked from your own garden are superior in taste, crispness, and texture to almost anything you could buy. Salad greens, sprouts and edible flowers enough for at least one, if not more, can be grown in as little room as a plantar box. Of course, the bigger your space, the greater the variety of greens and salad vegetables you can plant.

Another is good soil, which provides the basic nutrients and matter for the plant. Last but hardly least is water, which is as crucial to plant life as it is to human life. Water is perhaps the most basic ingredient of all life, a fact which we know partly because of the terrible effects of its absence.

Drinking water is vital to everyone. Safe drinking water is a luxury that most people have, but how "safe" is safe drinking water. Do I really need a water filter?

The most typical place drinking water comes from is a stream or river that originated high within a mountain. On the trip down from the mountain, the water picks up minerals and hard metals from the rocks and surfaces that it travels over. In many of these situations it goes through man made dams and other structures used to create electricity. After a long journey, it arrives in a purification plant owned by the city or county that provides it to you.

Soft water is essentially water that has the calcium and magnesium removed from it.

The most rudimentary elements to softening water are done in two simple steps:

  1. Introduce chemicals to the water that calcium and magnesium are attracted to, which will then form new chemicals within the water.
  2. Removal of the new chemicals that have been formed in the water and then filter out any impurities that may be left from this process.
