Here are some solutions that you can find to the challenges of gardening in small spaces.
Number one: Looking up
If you do not have the option of spreading out because there is nowhere to spread out to or because you have run out of room with your design plans you can always consider going up. When you start adding height in a small place, you can often give the illusion that the area is a lot bigger than it seems. Adding height gives the feeling of spaciousness because your eye has to travel to take in all of the different levels. You can add up through numerous ways. Here are some of the better ways to add height to your small gardening space:
- Fence - If you already have a fence in your gardening space, you need to take full advantage of it. A fence is the perfect place to display hanging baskets and garden art.
- You can also add a small trellis to your gardening space and grow vines on the trellis.
- Add some miniature lights around the top edge of your garden space so that you can highlight your garden at night. People will look upwards at the lights, which makes it seem like there is more space.
- You can create a theme of items throughout your garden space. For example, bird houses or plaques. When placing these items you can place them in different spots and at different heights to allow people's eyes to travel around.
- Wind chimes and small bird bathes are also very functional in a small garden space, but they are also fun to look at. You can hang them from hooks in the ceiling or fence or you can place wrought iron hangers of different heights throughout the garden to hang them from.
- A sundial can be added to a garden with a small space to add height in an area of your garden where there is none.
- You can also use a gazing ball, which is an old Victorian favorite. The gazing ball reflects the garden and gives a feeling of spaciousness like a mirror will inside a house. These balls come in different sizes and colors so you will be sure to find one that fits your needs perfectly.
- You can also stack containers for your gardening needs. You can stack them from large to small and plant the bigger plants in the bottom two containers to achieve the most from the limited space.
Number two: Choosing plants for the garden
Choosing plants for a small garden can be one of the hardest things about gardening in a small space. Luckily, nowadays there are plenty of plants that you can choose from that come in pixie or dwarf varieties. For example, if you like, roses you can get miniature roses that are just as pretty as regular rose bushes, but they give you nonstop blossoms and do not have as many pest and disease problems as regular rose bushes. You can also find small leafed hostas that thrive in shady areas. Ornamental grasses also come in dwarf varieties and can add texture and movement to your small garden space, as well as sound. You can also find small-scale plants that act as flowers and ground cover, such as forget-me-nots.
