Tip one:
Choose vegetables and fruits that you are going to eat. There is no sense in choosing fruits or vegetables that you will not eat in your garden because you will waste time and money growing them only to give them away or throw them away. You are also more likely to actively tend to your garden if you are growing something that you are looking forward to eating.
Tip two:
If you have kids that are helping, you plant and tend the garden you are going to want to plant a few vegetables that provide quick results. For example, radishes are a fast growing vegetable so kids will soon be rewarded by seeing their hard work come to life. Beans also sprout in about a week. If you are going with beans, you want to make sure you choose the right type for your garden. If you have limited space, you can use a pole bean, which they provide a higher yield in a limited space, but you have to provide them with support. Bush style beans do not require a trellis, so are a good choice for larger gardens.
Tip three:
Tomatoes are another favorite among gardeners because of how easy they are to grow. You can start them from seeds or you can buy transplants. The one thing to know about tomatoes is that the cherry tomatoes and plum tomatoes will provide a higher yield than big round tomatoes. Growing Roma tomatoes is also an option; Roma are great for soups and sauces. Your heirloom plants will produce a lower yield than others, but your hybrid plants will give you faster results. Pick the ones that work best for your needs.
Tip four:
Squash is also a great plant to grow because of how easy it is to grow, plus how many different varieties of squash seeds you can find. The one thing about squash plants is that you will need to have plenty of space to grow them because they take up a lot of room. When planting squash one or two plants will produce enough squash for the entire season.
Tip five:
Pumpkins are also a fun plant for children and adults alike, but they also require a lot of room. Pumpkin requires more room than other squash plants because of how big their vines get. The vines of a pumpkin plant can get up to fifteen feet long and will only produce one or two pumpkins.
Tip six:
If you are planting corn you will want to plant corn in a garden that has a lot of space because you will need to plant more than one row of corn, three rows of corn is the least amount you should do. The reason for this is that corn needs other corn stalks near it to produce good stalks of corn because birds do not carry the pollen from one stalk of corn to the other; the corn relies on the wind to carry pollen from one plant to the other. Corn should also be placed at the back of the garden because it provides a lot of shade, which will prevent other plants from growing.
