Choosing your decorating style

arch30715406.jpgMaking your house your home creates an opportunity for you to reflect who you are and what you enjoy in life. Finding the correct style that fits you and your personality can take some time. As you begin to decorate your home, look around and see what items you have in your home. This will help you determine what style you enjoy in your home and what style to use in your home as you purchase and create more decorations and furniture.

To help you decide what your style is, look around your home and see what pieces of furniture you already have and what colors you have used throughout your home. Look at the books, magazines and stores you shop at. This will help you narrow down your type of style and what appeals to you and your eye. You may like two different types of styles; this is great for a home that has multiple bedrooms and multiple levels. You can create a different style and different look in each of these locations. Multi tasking different styles may cause some confusion. Take pictures of your home that you can carry with you to help remember how you have styled each room or each level.

Where you home is located may also play a part in how you decorate and style your home. Do you live in the country in a farm house with 10 acres around your home? The style you choose may be a country theme with a modern twist. A modern high rise may create a desire for you to use a modern or retro style. Take your time as you decide what to style your home as. Choosing a style that is opposite than what you thought you liked may be the ticket to making your home exactly how you want it.
There are many styles available for you to choose from when decorating. Those styles may be:

  • Retro

  • Traditional

  • Country

  • Contemporary

  • Modern

A retro style home is full of bright colors and old vintage items. Such items can be old popcorn machines, shag carpet and rugs, lava lamps and much more. Use old signs and plaques as the artwork you place around your home. The retro style is made to represent the past and future together.
Traditional style homes are the most popular decorating technique that is used. The home is full of different types of decorative trim, crown molding, pattern fabric and light colors. The home will be rich with elegance, but will have a comfortable and warm feeling when you walk in.

The country style theme that is used in homes represents handmade items that you have either made yourself or purchased at boutiques and craft fairs. Many times a rustic feeling will come into play with the country style. The use of wooden furniture is commonly used and the artwork will represent the plains and animals.

Contemporary style is used when you want your home to look simple. You don't place items out for your guests to view and use. The floor plan of the home will stay open and will have little pieces of furniture that will allow the home to appear larger than it is. When you paint or decorate with artwork, you will need to make sure that each item has clean lines. Neutral colors are used with a contemporary home; blacks, white and browns.
A modern home is a style used by home owners that want to make a bold statement. The use of bold colors and clean lines are a must when you decorate a home in a modern style. The goal with a modern style is to create a warm home, but with cold colors and lines.
