Having mold in your home is something that most people try to avoid. The main reason people do not want to have mold inside their home is that different types of molds can cause different health issues. Another reason people do not want to have mold in their homes is that it makes your home look and feel dirty, not to mention it can make your home smell bad too.

Here are some tips that you can follow to help control mold growth in your home.

Tip one:

You should leave your air conditioning running whenever possible. The reason for this is that your air conditioning is going to get rid of any extra moisture in the air. With no moisture in the air, the mold is not going to be able to grow. You should also install attic fans in your attic to help with airflow. Check to see if your basement is properly ventilated, if there are, windows open them, if not you can add fans in the basement to encourage the airflow. You want to encourage the air movement because it prevents moisture from building up, the moisture build up helps mold to grow.

Tip two:

To prevent mold growth on concrete, which is possible if there is dust on the concrete what you are going to want to do is to first spray the concrete off with some type of detergent, you want to clean the dust off the concrete. By removing the layer of dust, you are taking away the food that the mold needs to grow, but the layer can come back so be careful. You will also need to dry the concrete and get some ventilation to it. You need to have proper ventilation so that the moisture doesn't build up and allow the mold to grow.

Tip three:

If your basement has been flooded, no matter how it happened, you need to take care of the problem immediately. The reason for this is that the longer the water sits and damages the carpet, the sheet-rock, the wood on furniture, etc the more chances you have of mold growing. By taking care of the water damage as soon as possible, you have eliminated the chance of any mold growing from the water damage. To help dry out the carpet you can use high-powered fans. With sheet-rock, you will need to replace the damaged sheet-rock because it will never properly dry out.

Tip four:

If you have any kind of leak from water in the house, you will want to repair the leak as soon as possible. To prevent mold from growing you will need to fix the leak, and replace any wood or sheet-rock that has been damaged by the water. You will also want to dry out the area so no further damage can occur.

Tip five:

In the kitchen, you will need some kind of exhaust fan to help keep the moisture out of the air. The kitchen gets a lot of moisture because of dishwashers, washing dishes, and cooking. Using an exhaust fan will pull the moisture out of the air, which prevents mold growth. Bathrooms also need to have some type of exhaust fan or at least a window that can be opened. Bathrooms get a lot of moisture from people bathing and showering in there. With both kitchen and bathroom, exhaust fans you will want to make sure that the fans are vented outside, not into the attic or garage or foundation. If they are vented anywhere but outside, they are just re-depositing the moisture into another part of the house.
