Many people want to start a vegetable garden because they know about the benefits they will receive from eating fresh vegetables. Starting a vegetable garden is a great way to save money because you will not have to buy fresh produce at the store, plus creating your own vegetable garden ensures that you know what has been put on the vegetables. The problem that many people have when creating a vegetable garden is becoming overwhelmed with the work that is required.

If you are thinking about creating a vegetable garden here are some tips that you can follow to make the job easier.

Tip one:

Start small. You do not need to create the world's largest vegetable garden the first time you plan a garden. If you start too big, you will easily become overwhelmed and chances are you will not finish the project because of how much work is going to be required. When starting for your first time chooses an area that is about 8' by 10', you can always go bigger next year.

Tip two:

Part of creating your vegetable garden is choosing the perfect location. When choosing the location for your vegetable garden you want to choose a location that does not get a lot of foot traffic, less chance of your plants being trampled. You will also need to choose a location that is easily accessible, if it is hard to get to you won't put out the effort. The location will also need to have as much sun as possible throughout the day, if you live in the north you should expect to find a location that gets full sun.

Tip three:

You will need to rent or borrow a tiller so that you can prepare the soil. Do not remove any sod because that will create a recess in the soil, which results in poor drainage. Part of preparing the soil entails looking at the soil to see if it is clay, sand or a sandy loam, sandy loam is the best. To determine your soil type squeeze it together, if it sticks it is clay, if it doesn't form a ball it is sand, if it forms a ball and crumbles when you let it go it is sandy loam. If you have sand or clay, you can mix in top soil to get the right type of soil or you can mix in compost, which will have to be done on a regular basis, it takes years to create a good soil type.

Tip four:

You will need to make sure that you pick out the right kind of plants for your garden. If you are starting with a small garden, you want to avoid the vegetables that take up a lot of room, such as pumpkin and corn. If you choose to plant tomatoes or peppers you will need to start them indoors about 8 weeks before you are ready to plant them or you can buy them as transplants. Make sure you do not plant anything outdoors until the last frost has passed; you can ask local nurseries or other farmers when his date is in your area.

Tip five:

To keep people out of your garden you can use a mesh fence if it is a small garden or you can use a larger fence for bigger gardens. Another problem that you might have is people stealing your fruits and vegetables, especially if it is a community garden. To prevent this try hiding your fruit or vegetables with straw or you can plant heirlooms, which do not look like regular fruits or vegetables.
