Dealing with insect infestations and bugs in your home can be extremely irritating. During the season changes it seems like all the new bugs hatch and somehow find their way into homes all over the world. So how do you keep bugs and insects out of your home? Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when trying to rid your house of unwanted insects and bugs.

Tip #1: Seal the cracks
One of the easiest ways for insects and bugs to get into your home is through the tiny cracks that are around the house. This is your first defense against keeping those pesky bugs out. Most insects and bugs that crawl will find a way in through a crack while flying insects will usually find their way in through windows and doors. Consider investing in some caulking so you can reduce the number of bugs and insects coming into the house. Make sure you seal around exterior plumbing and electrical outlets as well as making sure that all your door thresholds have good weather stripping under them. This will also make your house more energy efficient.

Tip #2: Invest in screens
If you don't already have screens in your window then go out and buy some to put in. Insects like flies, mosquitoes, and other flying insects are attracted to food odors and people and will gather outside of screen doors. Every time the door is opened they will buzz right in. Make sure the screen doors have good spring closers on them so they close quickly. Screens are nice because then as the weather starts to cool down a bit you can actually open your windows without having to worry about bugs and insects flying into your house.

Tip #3: Control outdoor lighting
Lighting isn't generally a problem during the day, but at night it can become quite a problem with flying insects that are attracted to them. Try and avoid leaving the porch lights on for extended periods of time as every time you open the door the insects will come flying through it. Instead of keeping the lights on all the time, consider investing in sensor lights. They come on when you need them to, but turn off so that you're not attracting every insect out there. Instead of using white lights, use yellow bulbs. Moths, and other insects are less attracted to yellow light bulbs than they are to white ones.

Tip #4: Change your garbage

If you were a bug or insect where would the best place be to find some grub? The garbage of course. In order to eliminate the biggest problems with flies, ants, and other insects make sure you empty your garbage frequently. In the summer when temperatures are hot it's even more important to change your garbage as smells will draw more insects and bugs. If you don't have a lid for the garbage then you might want to get one. This will also keep unwanted animals out of the garbage and from making unwanted messes.

Tip #5: Get rid of sitting water
When there's water sitting around, wet wood, or rotting wood near the foundation it will attract certain types of insects. Replace any rotted wood by the home's foundation or in flower beds to cut down on certain types of critters.

Dealing with insect infestations is definitely not a fun thing to do, but it is necessary in order to keep the bugs out and your home livable. Using these tips on dealing with insect infestations will help keep the bugs out, and your home nice and clean.
