Dealing with mold and mildew

When you have dark areas with moisture mold and mildew form. So, believe it or not, even if you think you are so careful, chances are you will get some mold and mildew forming in your bathrooms and basements of your home. So, what can you do about it? Try the following tips on dealing with mold and mildew:

Start by understanding the difference between molds and mildews. Molds are the source of all your problems. Mildews is a similar organism but is not the black stuff. So, usually in your house you are running into mold.

Second, understand what conditions in your home cause mold and mildew to grow, then watch out for these so you can eliminate them wherever possible. The conditions that cause mold growth are as follows: warmth, humidity over about 50%, a good source of food for the mold.

Third, know what mold food is. It can be damp wood, materials, painted surfaces, particleboard, and dirt in areas generally with poor ventilation. So, eliminate this and you will leave mold with nothing to feed off and thus render them unable to grow.

Fourth, do the following things to solve existing mold problems:
First let the area dry out thoroughly. Use fans if you need to. Then use the right products to remove mold. Use propionic acid for your mold remover. It is a great mold remover, and is safe for use. Don't use bleach, it does not work well, and it is not safe. Borax and borates can be effective, but will not remove the staining from molds. You can use phosphoric acid to do this instead of bleach. Heavy staining can be covered by painting but only if the area is dried thoroughly first.

Clean the area thoroughly. Use mold cleaning products. Then clean the area more often, and more thoroughly each week. Be sure to change filters to HEPA - type in all bathrooms, air conditioners, etc. Then, keep the area as dry as possible. This means fix water leaks as soon as you notice them, ventilate as much as possible, and make sure you pay attention to your areas so that you do not let a mold problem get out of control.

To prevent mold, try the following:

If you live in damp conditions, or do you have very good ventilation, then use a dehumidifier.

The best protection against mold prevention is to clean surfaces properly, and often. Mold can't grow on clean surfaces.

If you have had a flood, or if you have cleaned your carpets, and they were not dried thoroughly after, you may be harboring mold, so open all the windows, and run fans if you can. Once the carpet is dry you should vacuum with clean filters. Then use a dehumidifier, if there is a high level of humidity remaining.

If you have poor indoor air quality then be sure to change the filters to your ducting and air conditioning unit at least once a month, and vacuum the carpets well with cleaned filters.

When you can, open the windows and let fresh air in to the house. This will decrease your chances for mold.

For mold in the cellar or basement, you will want to find a way to eliminate flooding, and moisture build up. You will also want to treat it with mold treaters, and not store anything in cardboard, as this invites mold.

If your cellar has mold, it is going to be caused by a leak, so find the leak and fix it.
