Do I need a water filter?

Drinking water is vital to everyone. Safe drinking water is a luxury that most people have, but how "safe" is safe drinking water. Do I really need a water filter?

The most typical place drinking water comes from is a stream or river that originated high within a mountain. On the trip down from the mountain, the water picks up minerals and hard metals from the rocks and surfaces that it travels over. In many of these situations it goes through man made dams and other structures used to create electricity. After a long journey, it arrives in a purification plant owned by the city or county that provides it to you.

At the purification, facility the water runs through both natural and man made filters to remove any harmful chemicals, products, and sediments that may have come down with the water. It is also joined with the filtered water that is reusable from your drainage system in your city. All of this water is processed so that most of the impurities are gone from your water before it is sent to you.

Nevertheless, how does this water get to you? It then travels through pipes and through your house, to your faucet. This can introduce very small amounts of impurities due to metal erosion. This is a little known fact for most, but the water you drink has gone through many processes to give you the cleanest water possible. On the other hand, is it as clean as it should be?

Most think, "Why take the chance?" Adding water filters to a home is a very good way of clearing out even these little impurities that may be in your drinking water. Although having 100% water is not likely, getting 99% pure water is possible with a good water filtration system.

There are many types of water purification devices you can purchase for your home. Some are single contained units that attach to your drinking line or faucet, while others are complete filtering systems that have several locations in your home with filters. Filtering systems have become very important in today's health conscience societies. The benefits for filtering water on the body and skin greatly outweigh the cost of these systems.

Simple filter systems are those that attach directly to your faucet. These typically have either 1 or 2 filtering systems inside and eliminate up to 90% of impurities. More advanced system have at least 2 filters, 1 near the water heater and 1 in the water line to your sink as well as the faucet filter. These are more likely to remove up to 99%.

The biggest thing to consider when choosing a water filter is the cost per unit of water. Most of the time, a gallon is the unit of measurement for this. A filter that produces 100 gallons of pure water that costs $20.00 means that cost per unit is $.20. This is a reasonable amount to pay. The more you pay in the filtering of the water per unit, the more "pure" the water should be expected to be. For multiple filtering systems, you should times the cost per unit by the number of filters in your system. In the above cost, it would then be $.60 per gallon, which is still good for 100 gallons of 99% pure water. You should expect to change your filters no more than every 3 months, but no less than every 6 months.

Bottled water that you can purchase at a store is now regulated by the government, and in most case complies with the even heavier regulated drinking water regulation. They are however, typically no more than drinking water from a municipal source. A filtering system in your home is most of the time cleaner than even the filtered, bottled water you can purchase at the store.

The government heavily regulates water that comes to your home as drinking water. The regulations for safe drinking water were enacted in 1994 and state that there are limits in what can be in your water before it can be called "drinkable". You can visit www.fda.gov in order to see these regulations for yourself.
