Eco friendly updates

inspector19315677.jpgMany people are concerned about the size of their carbon footprint and how they are contributing to the state of the environment and making a difference in reducing their use and expenses. Living green isn't always an easy thing but can really be great for updating your home. Here are some common eco friendly updates that you can make to your home to make it more efficient and easier on the environment.

Some of the best changes that can be made to your home to make it more environmentally friendly involve structural things. Replacing the windows is a great way to reduce the energy wasted in a home and to make the temperature more comfortable all the time. Depending on how old your home is, the windows may actually be quite unsafe and very inefficient. Replacing them with newer vinyl, energy efficient, double paned windows can really make a huge difference in the home. New windows can also make everything in your home last longer and have less exposure to harmful UV rays because they are more effective at blocking out bad light. New windows can also make it much quieter in the home from outside noises like road traffic.

The changes that can be the most efficient are the ones that are used the most frequently by members of the household. One of the services or items that are used almost constantly without many people noticing is the HVAC system. High efficiency furnaces and air conditioning units can really make a difference in the utility bill while keeping the home more comfortable. One thing to be careful is not to spend too much on a new system. Many people can realize a considerable savings on their HVAC system with enough time, but many people will not even live in their homes long enough for the sometimes very high expense to be worth it in the end. When you are making a decision about what kind of system to install, you should also consider how long you will be living in the home and how long it will take you to recuperate the original investment. High efficiency air conditioning units can also make living in the summer more comfortable but more economical as well. These newer units also make much less impact on the environment and save energy.

Water heaters waste an incredible amount of energy depending on how the hot water in the home is used. Most heaters heat all the water to a certain temperature and then maintain that temperature. The problem comes when some hot water is used and cold water is added to the heater. This requires that all the water that was previously in the tank must be heated again. Because of the inefficient way waters have worked for years, people have come up with a new type of water heater that heats water instantly as it flows through the unit rather than heating a tank of water.

Energy efficient appliances are another great way to update your home and to make it more efficient. High efficiency appliances not only save energy but also typically work better than older appliances with much less expense. Energy star rated appliances are the most efficient as rated by the new standards applied by the government program. These appliances save a good deal of money each month on the utility bills and also contribute to saving energy in the home and making it more environmentally friendly. Another great thing about getting high efficiency appliances is that they frequently come with rebates from the local utility company or from the energy star program.
