- What is organic gardening? Organic gardening is one of the most popular types of gardening today. You have probably seen organic fruits and vegetables when you go to the grocery store. The word "organic" means that the fruits and vegetables were grown naturally, without any chemicals, toxins or pesticides used in the growing process. Many people feel that their fruits and vegetables are healthier when they have not had contact with pesticides, and this is why you see a growing interest in organic foods at grocery stores.
If you are interested in organic gardening, you can look into using organic compost, fertilizer and insect barriers for your garden. There are also creative ways that you can organically garden, such as spraying a diluted soapy concoction over your garden to help solve a problem with aphids. If you are further interested in organic gardening, you can read a magazine dedicated to organic gardening or ask a customer service rep at your local gardening shop.
- What is the difference between rich and poor soil? Many people are confused when it comes to explaining the difference between rich and poor soil. Rich soil generally has a lot of humus in it, and it often is a thicker texture than poor soil. Often, rich soil is a darker color than poor soil as well. In contrast, poor soil usually does not contain a lot of humus. Instead, poor soil tends to be more rocky or sandy. Poor soil also tends to drain more easily and quickly than rich soil, which means that poor soil dries more quickly in the sun.
However, you need to know that if you have poor soil in your garden, it doesn't mean that things will not grow! In fact, there are a lot of plants and flowers which do extremely well in poor soil. For example, many annual flowers do extremely well in poor soil that drains quickly. If you are interested in making your poor soil a little bit richer, however, you can use compost to help enrich your soil.
- How do I transplant plant starters? If you have bought some plant starters for your garden, you might be a little bit nervous in transplanting your plant starters from the container to your garden. The best thing to do first is squeeze the bottom of the container, where the roots of the plant starter are. This will loosen up the container so that the plants, root, and container dirt will all come out in one piece. When taking out the dirt in one big piece, you should lightly squeeze the bottom of the dirt block, to loosen up the roots a little bit. Then, you should place your plant starter in a hole that you have already prepared. This hole should be quite a bit larger than the roots and dirt block that has just come out of your plant container. You also can include some plant food at the bottom of your hole, before your place the starter inside. After putting your plant in the whole, tightly pack soil all around your new plant. Then, water your plant starter very well, so that it can get accustomed to its new setting.
