Garage floors

garagedoors41837917.jpgThe garage is an often neglected part of the house and is forgotten in many renovation projects, but it can really be a great place to store things and is also a great place to keep cars. But sometimes, the floor of the garage can be damaged by all of the activities that happen there and there are many steps that can be taken to protect it and make it more usable. Here are some suggestions...

There are two main types of garage floor modifications that can be added to the garage and that will make it a safer and better looking place to work and spend time. Floor mats are one option and putting on a garage floor sealer is an option too. Garage floor mats are a great way to protect the floor from oil and other fluids that come from cars or from other spills and debris in the garage. Mats are also more comfortable to work on and stand on for an extended period of time. Most people don't think about the preservation of their garage floor at a first thought, but the floor of the garage can be damaged by years of wear and tear and would eventually need to be repaired or redone. Having floor mats can really make it easier to prevent the harm that can come from the cars in the garage.

Adding mats to the garage floor is also a lot cheaper than having to redo the floor of the garage. There is some expense that will be needed to put them in, but putting in the mats is preventative care. Most garage mats cost anywhere between $.75 to $2 per square foot which is quite a bit cheaper than pouring new concrete and hiring a contractor to do the work for you. They are also quite easy to install once you have a plan.

The other option for garage floors is to add a concrete floor sealer. This makes the garage look much better and can also make it more durable and safer. Garage floor sealers are often non slip or have a type of additive that can be added to the floor to make them non slip. Although many people are not concerned about the look of their garage, having a sealed concrete floor can really add to the look and feel of the garage. It doesn't have to be a space in the home devoid of design and can actually be quite attractive when coupled with good organization and a finished and painted wall.

Another great thing about sealing the concrete floor is that it makes it much easier to clean as well. Stains don't stick to a sealed floor the way they would to an unfinished one and cleaning any dirt or liquids off the surface is much easier when you have used a garage floor sealer. If you are doing regular car maintenance in the garage, you probably understand how slippery antifreeze can get if it spills on the floor. This can cause a very serious health hazard especially when you are around tools and other dangerous items that could fall and injure you.

When you are deciding which kind of floor to put in your garage, you need to keep in mind how long you will keep the home and what you will really be using the garage floor. It is also important to keep a budget in mind and to stick to the budget in the process of buying everything you need for the floor. It is great to have a good floor in your garage and is even better to be able to put in the floor on a budget.
