Gardening for your yard and space

When gardening outdoors or indoors, you will need to take your yard or space into consideration. Some people are forced to choose between indoor or outdoor gardening, just depending on the type of space that they have available. For example, many urban residents need to garden indoors because they do not have the yard or space available outside to grow an outdoor garden. Here are a couple of things to take into consideration when gardening for your yard and space:

  • Avoid square or rigid flower boxes in your yard: It has been determined that the most aesthetically pleasing look for flower boxes are ones that are irregularly shaped or circular. You should avoid having square or rectangular flower garden beds in your yard, if possible. Instead, you should consider having circular garden beds that organically are placed in the green lawn, avoiding heavy flower box borders. This way, the flowers will look more like a colorful addition to the yard, instead of an imposing presence in the lawn.
  • Take light into consideration: Whether you are an outdoor or an indoor gardening, you will want to make sure that you take light into consideration for your gardening space. When you are gardening outdoors, make sure that you plant your gardens in an area that will have the right amount of sunlight for your plants. In addition, you will need to take light into consideration with indoor gardens as well. Make sure that your indoor plants can either get enough sunlight through windows or growing lamps.
  • Consider horizontal and vertical "open spaces": When gardening, you not only need to think about what the space can do for your garden (such as providing light), but you also need to think of what your garden can do for the space! For example, if you have a vertical house which has a lot of "empty space" on the exterior, you might want to plant tall flowers in that area to help decorate the empty space. Sunflowers, foxglove, and roses are all taller flowers which can help to fill up more empty vertical space. Or, you could plant corn or other tall vegetables to help "fill up" and decorate the empty space. If you have a lot of "horizontal" space that needs decoration, you could plant some groundcovers, pumpkins, zucchini, or other plants that will spread out horizontally.
  • Consider how much space the plants will need: One of the important things you need to do when gardening for your yard and space is choose plants which will require the right amount of space. For example, if you have a small garden space available, you will not want to plant large vegetable plants that will take up a lot of room. Seed packets and seedling planting instructions should give information about the planting spacing, which will help you to decide if you have enough space for each plant.
  • Indoor gardening lamps: If you are going to have an indoor garden, you will not only need to make sure that you have room for your plants, but you will also need to take the space of growing lamps into consideration. Growing lamps can take up a lot of space in a room, depending on the type of lamp that you decide to use. Make sure that you will be able to fit your plants and your growing lamps comfortably into your indoor garden space. If you do not take the lamps and space into consideration, then your indoor garden could become more or a nuisance than a fun hobby!

Have fun enjoying your garden and your lovely garden space! When gardening for your yard and space, you will be sure to have a space that will be pleasant and enjoyable for you!
