Getting grease spots and stains off carpet

If you have a lot of people coming in and out of your house, chances are it has taken a toll on your carpeting. This is especially true if you have children and pets. Between kids, their friends, and pets running in and out of and around the house, it is inevitable that your carpet will see some spots and stains at some point.

The following are some tips for getting grease spots and stains off of your carpeting:
- Use a cleaner. Resolve makes a good carpet cleaner for general stains. Get a commercial carpet spray and follow the directions for removing stains. If you have trouble with pet stains and odor, get a cleaner that is made specifically for that. If you have tough grease spots on your carpeting, many people recommend using a dish soap, such as Dawn, that is made specifically for cutting grease. Other people recommend applying straight ammonia to the stain, then cleaning it with a light cloth. What ever you try, make sure the area is well-ventilated, and test a small area first that can't be seen so you know whether or not it will fade your carpeting.
- Don't rub the stain in. Instead of rubbing the stain into the carpet with a towel, first apply a cleaner and let it set. Then use a damp cloth to lift the stain out. Don't use a cloth that is darker than the carpeting, as the fibers could bleed onto the carpet and make the stain even worse.
- Hire a professional. If all else fails, hire someone to come in and get your carpets cleaned. Professionals have access to machines and cleaners that are much more effective than most products you can buy in the store. You can also rent a steam carpet cleaner from some grocery or home improvement stores and do it yourself.
To avoid stains.
You can avoid spots and stains on your carpeting by following these tips:
- Have everyone who comes in to your house take off their shoes. This includes guests. It's easier to track grease and stains onto your carpeting if you are wearing shoes, especially if you come in from the garage. Make sure everyone takes their shoes off before entering your home. This will keep your carpeting looking clean and new for a long time.
- Apply a stain resistant spray to your carpet. Next time you get your carpeting cleaned, ask them to apply a spray that will help to repel stains and grease by making them easier to clean up.
- Get carpets cleaned regularly. Having your carpets cleaned regularly will help them stay cleaner longer and make it more likely that the stains on there now can be removed before they set in too long.
- Don't allow food in carpeted areas. One of the biggest causes of grease stains and spots comes from food spills. Keeping food out of the carpeted areas of your home can help to prevent grease spots and spills. If your dining room is carpeted, consider laying a rug down, or put a sheet or small rug under your kids' chairs during meal times.
