basements19156966.jpgHard water stains are everybody's worst nightmare. If you live in an area that has hard water you probably spend hours trying to get rid of those hard water stains. One of the best things that you can do to help cut back on the amount of time you spend cleaning those hard water stains is to buy a water softener system for your house, because hard water does not allow cleaning chemicals to work properly. Water softeners are not the answer for everybody, so here are some other tips that you can follow to get of those unsightly hard water stains.

Tip one:
You need to take action before the hard water stains appear. If you know that, you have hard water in your house you want to do everything that you can to prevent the stains from setting in. The best thing that you can do to prevent hard waters stains is to not allow the hard water to have time to set. For example, dry your shower door off with a towel or a squeegee to prevent the stains from appearing. You can also towel dry your dishes as soon as you have washed them.

Tip two:
If your shower door already has hard water stains, on them you can try using toilet bowl cleaner to get rid of the hard water stains. Spray toilet bowl cleaner over the entire shower door and let it soak for a few minutes. Get a very soft scouring pad; a hard scouring pad will damage the glass on the shower door. Using a soft scouring pad, you want to wipe down the entire shower door. When you are done rinse, the door with cool water and towel dry the door immediately. The glass will be streaked, so use glass cleaner to remove the streaks.

Tip three:
To prevent hard water build up in your dishwasher and on your dishes you will need to buy a rinse aid to be used in your dishwasher. There are two kinds of rinse aids available, the one that hangs from the top rack, and the one that is put into a dispenser inside your dishwasher. The rinse aid is going to eliminate the spots that are left on your dishes, but it might not always work. If you still experience spots, you will need to turn up the water temperature that your dishwasher is using and use the heated drying cycle. You can also try buying dishwashing detergent that is designed to reduce spotting.

Tip four:
Something else that you can try is using a solution made up of lemon juice and vinegar. If using this type of solution you do not want to use it to clean anything marble because the acid will etch the marble surface. To make the cleaning solution you will want to mix one cup of vinegar with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Using a washcloth apply the solution to the hard water stain and allow it to set for a few minutes. Rinse the area thoroughly and dry.

Tip five:
If home mixed solutions are not working for you, you can buy professional or store bought cleaning chemicals that are designed to remove hard water stains. When buying these products you need to ensure that they include phosphoric and sulfuric acid. This is important because the acid in the cleaners is what will be eating away the stain, similar to the acid in the lemon juice. Whenever you use these cleaning products, make sure that you wear gloves and protective eye gear, and only use the products in a well-ventilated area.
